Walter Shatford Obituary

SHATFORDWalter Tyrrel Shatford III, 57, loving father, son, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend. D eparted this life on March 10, 2007, at his home in San Gabriel, Calif., ending a long and valiant battle with a rare cancer. He is remembered by his large family and many friends for his generosity, integrity, gallant spirit, and irreverent sense of humor-as well as for involving as many people as possible in his numerous projects. He loved cooking inventive dishes for family and friends, playing chess and volleyball, sailing, woodworking, and devising creative entries for many Doo Dah parades. Diagnosed 1 0 years ago with cancer, he considered that every time he managed to do something that he would have done if he hadn't had cancer, he had achieved a victory over the disease. Earned a bachelor's degree in Physics from UC Berkeley (1971) and a law degree from Pepperdine University (1974). Practiced law at Shatford & Shatford in Temple City, in partnership with his father, for over 30 years. Survived by his children Walter T. Shatford IV, a student at UC Irvine, and Sally Shatford, a middle-school student at Polytechnic School in Pasadena; by his parents, Sara B. and Walter T. Shatford II of Pasadena; by his sister Sara Layne (Charles) of Los Angeles; by his brothers Thomas B. Shatford of Pasadena and Russell A. Shatford of Lexington, Kentucky; and by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Memorial service to be held 4:00 pm on Friday, March 16, at All Saints Church, 132 N. Euclid Ave., Pasa dena, to be followed by a reception at a location TBA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the City of Hope, 105 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90017 (attn: Randy Lapin/GI Program) or to the Los Angeles Maritime Institute, Berth 84, Foot of 6th St., San Pedro, CA 90731.

Dear Sara, Walter, Sally, Tom, Beeky, and Walter III's children,

I was so sorry to hear of "Little Walter's" death. It seemed with all the help and love he was receiving from you, and his own determined outlook, that he could live forever. Though I was five years older, I looked up to him when I was in High School because of his superior intellect, his self-assured persona, his beach volleyball skills, his willingness to try things that seemed scary to me, and because he was not intimidated by my Dad, Gordon Dillinger.

My thoughts are with you.
Love, Lee

Dear Sara,Walter, Sally, Tom and Beeky, and all who loved Walter,

I am so saddened by the loss of Walter, who was my best friend in high school at John Muir and someone who was always a joy to be with. I had been telling someone just the other day about the cliche contests he and I used to have as high school students, the zany times in honors chemistry, the joy that he always brought to ever occasion. I remember most vividly visiting with him at the Washington Hospital Center and his infectious smile and humor, despite the struggle. I loved him.

Sigh. I'll never forget that beautiful boy - I knew him in High School. He looked like paul newman with bright blond hair and gorgeous blue eyes...I had a great adventure with him sailing at crystal cove....we capsized his catamaran in a stormy sea a couple of miles offshore - and he surfed us in with a broken mast.....he was my knight in shining armor.

He will surely be missed.

Claw, Dolly, Tom, Beekster and family,

I will always remember the BEST of our too-short time with Wolfer. The Cove remains in our hearts, as does he. I cherish the memory of him at my wedding on the beach sporting swim trunks, collar, cuffs and a mischievous smile; the Easter beer hunts; the endless volleyball and card games. This is my time capsule of Walter Shatford, my friend. I am with you in spirit.

Dear Sara,Walter, Sally, Tom and Beeky,
I am saddened by your loss. I know that you all supported Walter, Jr and his immediate family through his illness.
The most difficult loss for parents is the loss of one of their children. I regret the pain you all are experiencing.
You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Feel free to call if you would like to talk.

Sara, Sally, Walter, Tom and Beeky:
My sister told me of your loss this morning. Walter and I hadn't spoken for about three years or so, and so it came as somewhat of a shock. Please pass my condolences along to "the kids".

Hope you receive this, as the newspaper indicates it is online until the 14th (yesterday)
