Warner Nelson Obituary

Nelson
Warner "Buck" D. Nelson
October 9, 1937 - December 16, 2017
Warner "Buck" D. Nelson, age 80, of Colorado Springs died on December 16, 2017 after five years of enduring Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD), an a-typical form of Parkinson's disease.
Warner was born on the first day of duck hunting season in 1937 on October 9 to Leslie and Florence Nelson of Graceville, Minnesota. He was the fourth of six children and the one who ventured the furthest from home as a young man. He received his master's degree from the University of New Mexico, his bachelor's from Minnesota State University Moorehead and learned to bake at Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. He was the head of the math department at Russell Middle School and moved to Doherty High School in 1976 where he taught until he retired in 1999. He also taught in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and in Sacramento, California.
His interests were varied; he was a runner, a cyclist, a handball player, a duck hunter, and an avid outdoorsman. His faith guided him and gave him comfort. He traveled extensively, both solo and accompanied. He had long stays in Australia, Alaska, Bolivia, and Arizona. He was a friend to many and those who knew him won't easily forget his quiet style.
Warner is survived by his daughters, Corinne Nelson, and Lisa (Jeff) Hein; sisters, Phyllis Andrews, and Carol (Dalas) Weisz; brothers, Richard (Pat) Nelson, and Frank Nelson; brother-in-law, Jerry Hendricks; grandchildren, Gabe Gonzales, Ben Gonzales, Michaella Hein, and Micah Hein; and has a great-granddaughter on the way.
Warner is preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Florence Nelson; sister, Jane Hendricks; brother-in-law, Arlo Andrews; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Nelson.

I attended Doherty and Mr. Nelson was extremely patient with this student (me) who struggled with math. Some of it even made sense! I'm sorry for your loss.

Warner and I carpooled to Russell Middle School together back in the 1970's. I remember us hitting a patch of black ice on Fillmore Hill in his old Toyota Land Cruiser and doing a complete 360 degree spin, coming out of it rolling downhill like it never happened and looking at each other in horror and amazement. We marched through the 1975 teachers' strike together and shared a lot of great stories at the Star Bar. He enjoyed life and was someone you could always count on. He will be missed.

Here's to the square root of two! Warner will be missed and remembered every time the lights flicker on and off or a home made pizza comes out of the oven. Your friend. Dave finstrom
