Wayne Henry Banks passed away on Dec. 27, 2022.
Wayne was born on May 7, 1933, in Limon, Colorado to Henry and LaVerna (Theisen) Banks. Henry, LaVerna and Wayne moved around some during the 1930's, Limon, Woodland Park, Hugo, Eastonville and in 1939, the family lived and worked at the Tarryall Dude ranch. In 1941, Wayne and his folks moved to a ranch a few miles west of Tarryall at the base of Badger Mountain. The mountains were always home to our Dad. Wayne attended grade school in Tarryall and graduated high school in the one room schoolhouse in Florissant. He was the only kid in his graduating class.
In 1953 he enlisted in the Army and spent 2 years in Germany. The enlisted men whose last name began with A – M were sent to Germany. Anyone whose last name started with O - Z went to Korea. Wayne always considered himself lucky to have the last name Banks.
In 1955, Wayne met, and married Glenda Brinton and they made their home in Colorado Springs until 1992 when they moved to the mountains west of Lake George to a home they built themselves in the early 1970's. The view to the west was Badger Mountain. Dad was always saying to mom, "you can take the boy out of the mountains, but you can't take the mountains out of the boy".
Wayne joined the Colorado Springs Police Department in July of 1956. He started as a patrolman and retired in 1986 as Deputy Chief of Police. He was proud of his career in law enforcement and his family was proud of him.
Wayne was a member of the Soil Conservation Society (Dirt Savers) and the Elks.
One of the highlights of Wayne's life was being a member of the Pikes Peak Range Riders and their equestrian drill team, the Pivots. While a member of the Pivots, he loved riding his horse, Wendy, in the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo and other rodeos in the area. He and Glenda had wonderful memories of annual rides/dinners, parades, rodeos, family rides, and treasured the lifelong friendships they made along the way.
During their retirement, Wayne and Glenda traveled extensively in their RV and in recent years they enjoyed spending winters in Yuma, AZ, surrounded by friends, both old and new.
Our Dad was a son, husband, father, friend, cop, and a true cowboy. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and wife Glenda. His is survived by his daughter Laura (Rick) Severson, his son Curtis (Donna) Banks, grandson Jacob Banks and his niece Terri Binder.
A funeral service will be held on January 11, 2023, at 10:30 at Swan Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903.
Wayne will be laid to rest privately at Fairview Cemetery, 1000 S. 26th Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80904.
