Wendell Bell Obituary

Wendell K. Bell, a forty-six year resident of Woodland Park, Colorado passed away Friday May 14, 2010 in Colorado Springs, Colorado at age 86. Born Oct 26, 1923 in Coopersville, Wayne County, Kentucky to parents William Thomas Bell and Rhoda Mary Bell. His siblings Hilbert, Wentford, Vela Foster, Claude, Cecil, and Josephine preceded him in death. Proud father of Gary, David (Jo Marie), John (Marisa) and James (Wendy), he loved and enjoyed eleven grandchildren. He was survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Lena Virginia Huffaker. Honorably Discharged from the U. S. Navy following World War ll, he served in the Asian Pacific and the Atlantic Theaters aboard the USS Sandpiper. Wendell farmed tobacco in Kentucky, and was a precision inspector for General Motors prior to teaching and coaching high school for 35 years. He graduated from Auto Diesel College in Nashville, Tennessee and Union College in Barbersville, Kentucky. Graduate work at the University of Colorado, University of Northern Colorado, and Eastern Kentucky University rounded out his education. As a high school educator he was "Teacher of the Year" in Calhan, Colorado for 1957-1959. Inducted into the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame with over 200 victories at Crooksville High alone. He coached the 1965 Colorado State Champion, Wiggins Tigers. Many of his basketball, baseball, and track teams won regional, district and sectional titles. Wendell, one of the "Table Lizards of Woodland Park", will be missed by all. Abiding by his request for no services the family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Mountain View Methodist Church of Woodland Park, Colorado.

Dear Bell Family, My deepest sympathy and love are with you all. Wendell was one of the nicest men I knew and I enjoyed visiting with him and Virginia so much. They have been good friends to me for many years. God Bless you all. Marilyn Cummins
