William Arnold Obituary

A graveside service for Col. (USA - Ret.) William E. Arnold, Jr. will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009 at 10:00 am in Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs, CO. Col. Arnold passed away Monday, October 19, 2009 at Broomfield Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Broomfield, CO. He was 89. Col. Arnold was born February 7, 1920 in Charlotte, NC and had been a Colorado Springs resident since 1966. Col. Arnold attended Junior Military Academy in Tennessee and Barley Military Academy in South Carolina prior to enlisting in the Army in 1941. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps in 1942 and integrated into the Regular Army in 1946. Col. Arnold served in a variety of command and staff assignments throughout the United States and overseas areas which included the Caribbean, Germany, Belgium, Korea, Okinawa and Greenland. Col. Arnold served at the Pentagon, Department of the Army and at the Army Air Defense Command (ARADCOM) in Colorado Springs. He was the recipient of numerous service and campaign medals, including the Legion of Merit and the Belgium Military Cross. While in the Army, Col. Arnold attended and graduated from the Artillery Advance Course at Fort Sill, OK, the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS and the National Strategic Intelligence School in Washington, DC. Col. Arnold retired in 1972. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans. Col. Arnold was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Doris T. Arnold. Col. Arnold is survived by two sons, Todd of Broomfield, CO, Dan of Aurora, CO; a daughter, Lea of Dana Point, CA; his long-time companion, June Howard of Colorado Springs and four grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, remembrances should be made to the Humane Society Of Pikes Peak Region or to the charity or organization of the giver's choice.
