William Lehman Obituary

Colonel Bill Lehman passed away peacefully on July 6, 2013. He was born in Belleville, New Jersey on August 31, 1919 to William F. and Mae E. Lehman. Bill spent most of the early years of his life living in High Point, NC. Bill's brothers Bobby and Harmon also grew up in High Point. Bill graduated from High Point High School in 1938. After graduation, Bill worked around High Point in various jobs. He enlisted after the start of WWII and served in the Army Air Corp until his discharge in 1945. He worked for a number of years for Bell Labs until the start of the Korean War when he was recalled. He remained in the USAF until his retirement in May of 1977. Bill and his family were stationed in Germany, Iowa, Massachusetts and Colorado Springs. Of all of his assignments, his favorite was Colorado Springs, where he moved in 1963. After 3 tours in Vietnam and a tour at the Pentagon, he decided it was time to retire. He enjoyed his retirement immensely. He briefly worked in real estate, but realized it conflicted with his joy for golf, travel and his beloved Air Force Falcons. He was a longtime member of the First Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs, where he made many lifelong friends. Bill remained active into his early 90s, at which time he moved to Mackenzie Place to enjoy the rest of his life. He is preceded in death by his father, William F.; his mother, Mae; and stepmother, Jesse; his brother, Bobby; and wife, Shirley. He is survived by his sons, William R. (Dallas) and Robert H.; and his wife, Lauri; and daughter, Emma; and his former wife, Gerre Lehman (Dallas). Funeral services will be held at a future date in High Point, NC. Those who wish to remember Bill can do so by donating to The First Lutheran Church @ 1515 N Cascade in Colorado Springs or the USAFA Athletic Association.

I will always think of Bill as an adoptive father. He shared stories with me about parachuting into Germany looking for German jet manufacturers, how he was one of the test pilots of the SR71 and childhood stories of him and his brother. I will always love him. Jim Scanlan
