William Smithhisler Obituary

William Leo Smithhisler, age 79. Bill left this life on June 12, 2015 in San Pedro, California. Bill was born on June 20, 1935 to Leo Smithhisler and Lillian (Meixner) Smithhisler in Danville, Kansas.

He leaves behind his four sisters; (Ann Marie)Sister Mary Barbara Smithhisler, Mary Ellen (and Roger) Kittridge, Yvonne Daugherty, and Rita Fister, along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He attended St Mary's High School in Wichita, Kansas. He then graduated from St. Mary's High School in Colorado Springs in 1953. He pursued a degree in Mathematics at Regis College in Denver. After attaining his B.S. degree, Bill filled a teaching position at St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. While at SLU, he also gained a Master's degree in Mathematics.

Bill was drafted into the United States Army from 1960 to 1962 as a Mathematician and the Directorate of Engineering. In August of 1962, Bill received an honorable discharge from the US Army.

He continued his career in mathematics and sciences working as a Space Scientist and Senior Project Engineer. Bill furthered the scientific and mathematical fields at places such as NASA, Litton, Hughes Aircraft, McDonnell-Douglas, General Motors Corp, and Bendix Aerospace Division. Bill received the Outstanding Achievement Award from Hughes Aircraft in 1980. In 1991, Bill retired in San Pedro, California.

Bill enjoyed advanced mathematics, political debate, a love for singing, John Wayne, and especially making people laugh. He was a member of Mary, Star of the Sea parish in San Pedro.

A memorial mass will be held at 10 am on Saturday June 27, 2015 at Divine Redeemer Catholic Church at 927 N Logan Ave, Colorado Springs. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to "Milestone Hospice, Inc." in Torrance, California.
