Wilma Bumpers-Komolafe Obituary

Wilma Delores Bumpers-Komolafe was born January 10, 1929 in James (Diana), TX to William Peoples and Precious George Peoples. She passed away on April 21, 2006. Wilma moved to Colorado Springs, CO where she made her home for over 50 years. While residing in Colorado, she owned and operated many businesses. Such endeavors included being a master Cosmetologist, entrepreneur, licensed instructor, good human being, and devoted Christian. Not only was she known as the "Hat Lady", she was also well recognized throughout the community. A life long member of the NAACP, she was also involved with organizations such as the Salvation Army and Sickle Cell. Wilma never looked for special recognition; she was always willing to give a helping hand whenever it was needed. She fed those that were hungry, clothed those that were in need, and sheltered those who were homeless. Always giving of herself and putting others before her, she was a kind and gentle angel that lived here on earth. Her joy came in seeing others happy and she left her extraordinary legacy in the world. Wilma is survived by her husband of 10 years, Bankole Komolafe; two daughters: Elisabeth Montgomery (Marcus Bazemore) and Shola Komolafe; one granddaughter, Tamara Henderson (Elbert Henderson Jr.). Also, her sisters: Lessie Daniel of Colorado Springs, CO and Elizabeth Hobbs, of New Mexico, one aunt, Nora George Hodges of San Diego, CA; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins. She will also be missed by all that admire her for her favorite dishes, especially her peach cobbler and homemade rolls. Visitation will be on Tuesday, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Evergreen Funeral Home 1830 E. Fountain Blvd. Services will be on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Radiant Assembly of God, 4020 Maizeland Road. Graveside services will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 3825 Airport Road.

I adored my "Aunt Wilma" and she adored me. I miss her so much, expecially those early morning phone calls. And I know she was extremely HAPPY when she died. How could it get any better than that???

I am very sad to hear of this great and tremendous loss. Remember God is your refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1). Would like to encourage the family to continue to look to Jesus for strength, comfort and joy. The Bible says that the LORD Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first...Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord (First Thessalonians 4:16-18). The Bible instructs us to comfort one another with these words. God will keep His promise! God bless and keep each of you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

My prayers are with you Wilma, and your family. You did my hair when my mother went on vacation and my father didn't know what to do. It was the first time I ever had it cut shorter and pressed and curled. Banana Curls was my favorite...I was 7 years old. I will always remember you and Lizzy. Say hi to my daddy and my momma in heaven... You will be missed.

Always,

When my family first moved here to C.Spgs in 1970, Mrs.Bumpers did my sisters and my hair. I bought the most beautiful suits from Mrs. Bumpers when I became an adult. I will always remember her generosity and giving spirit she always exuded to others. My condolences to her family.

When I was about 12, Mrs. Bumpers would come by and pick up all the neighborhood kids in an old brown van, we would all pile in and try not to smash her hats that were in the back. She would bring food every Sunday with her to church so that children wouldn't be hungry all day. Myself and two other little girls would spend many weekends at her house (she read her bible and we banged on the piano and played dress up with all the clothes she had). She took me to fashion shows and included me in most everything she did and I am grateful for the time she gave. I was witness to her compassion for others and experienced what a giving woman she was. I watched, as a young girl, her allowing so many people to come into her home, until they could get on their feet. She had an enormous affect on the adult I became. She was truly an Angel on earth, and there are not many around like her. I love her and will miss her!
