Wolfgang Uhl Obituary

Wolfgang Uhl

Wolfi was born in Kempten, Bavaria, Germany in the foothills of the German Alps to Josefine Beinder Uhl and Johann Uhl. Growing up in wartime and post war Germany, he went to work at age 14 in a ski shop. He started from the beginning, putting metal edges on wooden skis and hand sewing leather grips on bamboo ski poles. He immigrated to Colorado Springs when he was 23 and became a U.S. citizen as soon as possible. He was very proud to be an American. His first job was at The Ski Shop. He worked in the ski repair department because he spoke no English. He quickly learned English and shared his humor through stories and mischievous pranks. Wolfi loved what he did and loved bringing joy and the fun of skiing to, in many cases, 3 generations of customers. His expertise reflected Wolfi's true spirit of being one with the mountain on skis. He worked in two other ski shops until The Ski Shop came up for sale, and he and his wife, Julie, bought The Ski Shop in 1981. His son, Rick, now owns the store with his brother, Scott, at his side. Wolfi was very proud that the business has been in the family for 43 years. Wolfi is survived by his loving wife Julie; sons, Scott Uhl (Dulcy) and Rick Uhl (Debbie); granddaughters, Emily Uhl and Katie Uhl; and sister, Margaret Uhl Sales, all of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by six nieces and nephews, his brother, Arthur Uhl (Rosa) of Kempten, Germany, and aunts, uncles, and numerous cousins in Germany. A funeral service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church Chapel in New Orleans on Wednesday, January 8th at 11:00 with visitation at 10:00. Private burial will be at Metairie Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held in Colorado Springs at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a turn or two for Wolfi on your next ski trip. If you don't ski, please remember a funny joke or smile he may have shared.

Thank you Wolfi for guiding 3 generations of our family through decades of ski equipment, beginning in the late 1960s. You will be missed.
