Y.A. Tittle Obituary

Y.A. Tittle, the Hall of Fame quarterback and 1963 NFL Most Valuable Player, has died. He was 90.

His family confirmed to LSU, where Tittle starred in college, that he passed away. No details were immediately provided.

Known as "The Bald Eagle" as much for his sturdy leadership as his prematurely receding hairline, Tittle played 17 seasons of pro football. He began with the All-America Football Conference's Baltimore Colts in 1948 and finished with the NFL's New York Giants. He played 10 years in between with the San Francisco 49ers, but had his greatest success in New York, leading the Giants to three division titles in four years in a remarkable late-career surge.

Tittle never won a championship, but came to personify the competitive spirit of football, thanks to an iconic photo taken by Dozier Mobley during Tittle's final season in 1964.

The frame caught the then-37-year-old quarterback, who looked older than his years, after throwing an interception returned for a touchdown by Pittsburgh's Chuck Hinton. Tittle is seen kneeling in exhaustion and pain from an injured rib, blood dripping down his face from a head gash.

Tittle, also called "YAT" by his teammates, was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. He threw 36 touchdown passes while winning the MVP award in '63, and held the NFL record for most TD passes in a season until Dan Marino threw 48 in 1984.

Tittle passed for 33,070 yards and 242 touchdowns in two leagues during his career, including 13 300-yard passing games in an age when the running game dominated the sport. Tittle was the only quarterback of his generation to throw at least 30 touchdown passes in back-to-back seasons when he did it with the Giants.

Born Yelberton Abraham Tittle in Marshall, Texas, on Oct. 24, 1926, he led LSU to the Cotton Bowl before he was drafted by the NFL's Detroit Lions in 1948. He joined Baltimore of the AAFC instead, sticking with the Colts when they joined the NFL in 1950 until they temporarily disbanded the following year, when he was redrafted by San Francisco, another former AAFC club.

Tittle then started 78 games and earned four of his seven Pro Bowl selections during a decade with the 49ers. He even became the first pro football player to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1954.

For three seasons, he was part of the 49ers' "Million Dollar Backfield" with Hugh McElhenny, Joe "The Jet" Perry and John Henry Johnson — the only full backfield in NFL history with every member in the Hall of Fame.

The group was broken up in 1957, and Tittle lost his job to John Brodie for most of his final three seasons with San Francisco. Tittle still teamed up with receiver R.C. Owens to create another piece of football history with the "alley-oop" pass — a high-arching downfield throw with Owens' exploiting his superior jumping ability against smaller defensive backs.

Tittle's career appeared nearly finished when San Francisco traded him to New York, but the quarterback was an improbable hit in the Big Apple. He became the Giants' starter in 1961, winning over fans and teammates who had favored 40-year-old Charlie Conerly.

Tittle became one of the NFL's most dependable passers, and New York reached the league's title game from 1961-63, but lost each time, leaving Tittle agonizingly short of his only remaining goal. The Giants plummeted to 2-10-2 in 1964, and Tittle retired after one of his worst pro seasons.

Tittle established Y.A. Tittle & Associates Insurance Services during his playing days, and he ran the business in Palo Alto, California, well past the standard retirement age. He appeared briefly in the 1999 movie "Any Given Sunday," playing a coach, and was a favorite presence at memorabilia shows and NFL alumni functions.

When I was 10 years old, one fall day in Maine, I turned our TV and there was this football game on and it was the New York Giants with Y.A. Tittle at qb, throwing the football all over the place. Well, I quickly became a Giants and Tittle fan. I still remember the 1963 Championship game when Larry Morris hit Y.A., so he wasn't able to plant his feet properly and so the Giants lost a Heartbreakers that broke my heart and does to this day.
Y.A. has always been my hero. I have his autographed jersey, his biography, his 49ers trading card, etc. Y.A. was a class act on and off the field. My heart was deeply saddened to hear of his passing.

As A Giant fan, I remember Y. A. Tittle as the best pure passer the Giants have ever had in their long history. In August 1961, the Giants acquired Y.A. from the 49ers and Del Shofner from the Rams. This tandem lit up opposition defenses on a weekly basis. One game I recall at Yankee Stadium against the Redskins, he threw seven touchdown passes tieing a league record held by Adrian Burk of the Eagles at the time. He spent four years with the Giants and was such a force that they retired his number 14. He certainly deserved it. RIP 14!

WOW...........I'ts hard to believe the passing of Y. A. Tittle. I was born and raised in Massachusetts and was a true follower of Y.A. and the Giants at that time. As a child growing up I wanted to change my name to Y.A. but my mom said no. To this day that is one thing I regret not doing. I actually Love and respected him so very much. As a Patriots fan today and a fan of Tom Brady, to this day, I consider Y. A. the G.O.A.T. I have so many great memories and memorabilia of this man, I'll never forget him. To his family my Deepest condolences, he'll be missed by many. Rest in Peace Y. A., you'll never be forgotten.....

To the Tittle family: May all your memories of Y.A provide you with comfort in this time of sadness. Y.A. truly lived, like the movie, a Wonderful Life.

With Y.A.'s passing, the fabric of 1950's-60's football history takes another sad turn. Y.A. was one my childhood heroes while growing up in Massachusetts in the 1960's. The NY Giants were broadcast in our area back then, since the Patriots didn't exist yet. Y.A. was always exciting, marvelous, very cerebral, and those long "bombs" to #85 Del Schafner were always thrilling! Y.A. was a good man, a very fine man and he will be dearly missed. May he rest in peace.

Y.A. is a great favorite of my older brother and me. The good old days of watching Mr. Tittle and the Giants playing at Yankee Stadium - that was a highlight of my boyhood in Massachusetts. We will always think of Y.A. with great fondness.

October 19, 2017

My boyhood idol. If Y.A. knew the extent to which he inspired my brother and I to learn how to throw "perfect spirals, just like Y.A. Tittle", my guess is he would have been amused, perhaps a bit honored and, if we were lucky, maybe even willing to give us a couple of tips on how we could have thrown it even better. We spent countless fun hours throwing the ball around, perfecting routes and "plays" that always seemed to win "the game" on the last play of our imaginary game situation. Like millions of other New Englanders, we grew up uniquely privileged to watch ALL televised New York Football Giants games, home and away. Every Sunday in the fall had its eagerly kept ritual and routine, pouring over our parents' Sunday N.Y. Times sports section in the morning, seeking out every crumb of pre-game Giants news we could uncover - we had the entire Giants roster, players and their numbers, memorized, our mother in the background reminding us "If you paid as much attention to your school work as you do to the Giants, you'd both be better off."..."Yah, Ma." (She was right of course.) I always said that if I ever met Y.A. Tittle, my guy, I would have been at a total loss for words. I never did meet the man, but I like to think I will one day, where my brother and I invite Y.A. to our house to spend a Sunday watching OUR Giants and who knows, maybe even toss the ball around at halftime. Now that would be heaven. May God bless you, Y.A. Tittle.

Dear Tittle family, what a great man Y.A was and having been raised by L.C.Tittle and Bessie, we watched with them Y.A.'s games on the black and white tv and they were very tickled and proud of his success. We enjoyed visits when he was in town in Marshall and stopped by to say hi and introduce us to family and kids. He stopped by to see me with Don and daughter, Diane and friend here at my job at East Tx Open Door where I am Treatment Director for kids and the staff were amazed at meeting him. He and dad, L.C.Tittle Jr. were close and he shared with me his love of daddy and some great stories of he and my dad having fun here in Marshall. It meant so much to see him and all of you. Marshall is sharing alot of love for him always and every day. Love to you all. I let Vona, Julie and Anna Hunstberger, our neice know and they also send love. Exa Tittle-DiGiovanni

I was a neighbor back in Marshall, TX, went to school with him, rode same school bus. I remember seeing the print of his running shoes in the road, he ran every day. He was a dedicated football player. I remember some of the mothers of members of the team wonted the Coach to make him not through the ball so hard, he was hurting those who caught the pass. I watched him many years on T.V..
