David Welch Obituary

Dr. David George Welch, 79, of Lake Placid, NY, died suddenly on January 10, 2025 while cross-country skiing. Dave was born on July 26, 1945 in Rochester, NY and adopted by George and Martha (Brewster) Welch of Schenectady, NY. He graduated in 1967 from Cornell University, and from at Temple University medical school in 1971.

Dave married the love of his life, Mary (Arnold), on August 19, 1968, and together they built a family of love and trust. They raised their three children in Glens Falls, enjoying outdoor activities together, including cross country skiing, cycling, and hiking. Dave was a father, coach, timer, cheerleader, guide, and organizer, not just for his own children's activities, but for the neighbors and community. He never missed a ski race, Little League game, diving competition, or concert in which his children participated and he traveled thousands of miles to cheer on his grandchildren.

Once the children were launched, Dave and Mary combined their love of the outdoors and travel. They enjoyed numerous walks and bike rides through the Adirondacks and Europe; they celebrated their 60th birthdays by riding their bikes across the country.

Dave parlayed his love for the outdoors into community and volunteer activities, including high school and USSA ski races. He was a volunteer ski instructor at the Paul Smiths VIC and enjoyed clearing and grooming skiing and hiking trails. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and with the local parishes of Our Lady of the Annunciation (Queensbury) and St. Agnes (Lake Placid).

Dave was a Physiatrist in Glens Falls for more than 30 years, where he worked side-by-side with Mary at the practice they founded - Adirondack Rehabilitation Medicine. Taking his role of rural doctor to heart, he would regularly do house calls to patients whom he cared for as family. Dave and Mary moved to Lake Placid permanently in 2005, and he continued his practice at Adirondack Internal Medicine & Pediatrics in Saranac Lake until he "retired" in 2017.

Throughout his career, Dave provided medical services across rural New York, including as the Hamilton County Public Health Service Medical Director from 1978 through 2024, the Wilton Developmental Center, and many small-town clinics for several decades. He trained medical providers to listen to their patients and treat them as people, not symptoms.

Dave was a man of faith - in God and people. He found peace in the exploration of faith and love and sought to lead by example, but did not impose his beliefs on others. He truly believed that loving and doing for others makes the world a better place and he put that into practice every day. At 6'4" he was hard to miss and harder to keep up with on the many journeys he led. He was a gentle giant whose grin and humor put others at ease. He is loved by his family and many others. There are few corners of the eastern Adirondacks, or anywhere he traveled, where he didn't leave an impression on those who met him.

Dave is preceded in death by his parents, Martha and George and leaves behind his beloved wife of 57 years, Mary (Arnold); his children Brian, Peter (m. Pamela), and Kate (m. Ray Eldridge); grandchildren Patrick, Parker, and Kelsey; and his sister, Nancy (m. Teddy Arotsky). He also leaves innumerable friends, neighbors, acquaintances, patients, and coworkers. He will be sorely missed but remembered with love and a smile.

Visitation will be 4:00-6:00 PM, Jan. 15, 2025 at Clark Funeral Home and memorial Mass at 10:00 AM, Jan. 16, 2025 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, both in Lake Placid.

The other day while visiting my home and past employment at Glens Falls Hospital I brought up the name of Dr David Welch and how much respect I had for him. At that time early 1980's I took a position in occupational therapy and worked for him in that department.
He was a very caring doctor who was so kind not only to the patient but the families. He wanted to make sure that his department would closely with patients and their family. He always kept us on our toes. I enjoyed working for him so much I can imagine what a wonderful man he was for the people in Lake placid area.
My sincere sympathy to his wife and children. May God keep him in his Loving hands.

Mary...I am so sorry to hear the sad news of Dr. Welch´s passing. I have thought of both of you often over the years. The time I spent working at the office in Glens Falls left me with countless memories, with many of them being quite amusing. You and Dr. Welch were responsible for introducing me to cross-country skiing (biking and rollerblading as well!) I have always thought of cross-country skiing as a special gift because it has been an activity that I love and one that has brought a great deal of joy to both my family and me. I think Dr. Welch may have been the "Johnny Appleseed" of cross-country skiing. We are expecting a skiable snow here in Maine tonight and I will pay reverence to Dr. Welch when I am out on the trails.

Dr. Welch was a genuinely good man. His kind and compassionate treatment of his patients was an inspiration and his dedication to family and to his community was ever-present. His was certainly a life well lived.

I am praying for peace and comfort for you, Brian, Peter, Katie and all of your family members. My deepest sympathies to you all.

Dear Mary and family,
We remember with fondness the first couple winters we were on Pershing Road, and Dave encouraging our girls to try cross-country skiing. A few years later, we were in Placid for one of the girls to race, and there was Dave in a race of his own. His enthusiasm was infectious!
Good memories.
Praying that you can find peace, as he most certainly has.

I was a nurse on the rehab unit at GF Hospital many years ago. Dr Welch was incredibly kind to his patients and the staff and was truly one of the wisest and most humble MDs I´ve ever met. My sincere condolences to his family and fiends.

I worked with Dr. Welch for many years in the PM & R department at Glens Falls Hospital. My first interaction with him was when he was working with a patient who had recently lost his leg. He was empathetic and provided "tough love" which this patient needed during his challenging time. As a therapist and later rehab director, I could count on his direct and candid communication on many different topics . He provided a solid foundation for rehabilitation in the community.
So sorry for your loss, Mary and family.

Dr. Welch, thank you for teaching me, at a young age, what true compassion and empathy were. You inspired me to treat the most vulnerable among us with the value and care they so deserve. To Mrs. Welch and family, I´m so sorry for your loss. May each of you find comfort in your memories of him.

Mary, Thinking about you and your family. I have a wonderful memory of the time I took my very old, failing dad on an appointment to see Dave. He could not have been kinder. I also have several memories of you and Dave at Cole´s Woods ski races when our children were young.
