May 29, 1932 - June 9, 2025
Ms. Shirley Holt Fonville, 93, of Greensboro, passed away on June 9, 2025, under the care of Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. Born in Burlington, NC, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Lois (Mize) Holt and wife of the late Grady Fonville.
Shirley was an incredible woman with many talents. She was a gifted photographer and later became the first woman president of the Southeastern Professional Photographers Association. Her specialty was in capturing weddings and portraits from her home studio. She won awards for her work and was featured in news articles as she was also heavily involved in the Professional Photographers of NC. When she was not honing her own abilities, she taught photography classes to others. Her family was a priority in her life, and she was an exceptional mother, grandmother, and friend.
Shirley is survived by her children, Gordon Fonville and wife, Sadonna, and Edwin Fonville and wife, Janithcia; her grandchildren, Brandon Fonville and partner, Kelly Howard, Ryan Fonville and wife, Ashton, Jordan Fonville, and Mitchell Fonville and wife, Karla; her great-grandchildren, Juliana Fonville, Mitchell Fonville, Kinley Fonville, and Jeremiah Fonville; and her cousin, Bob Fonville.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Jean Turner, Elizabeth Ann, and Butch Holt.
The family will receive friends at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Service Lambeth Chapel, 300 W Wendover Ave, Greensboro, NC 27401 on Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 10 to 11 a.m. Graveside funeral services will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Pine Hill Cemetery in Burlington, NC, with Mitchell Fonville officiating.

I remember Shirley when we were both members of the sunshine's ABWA organization. She was a good friend and also did some great photography for me. Have not had contact with her for many years, but fondly remember her.

Eddie and family, so sorry to learn of Shirley's passing. She was a former client of mine at Edward Jones and I just remember how spunky she was when I had conversations with her. Loved that about her! She will be missed by many, but the memories we hold in our hearts will be there forever.

So sorry to hear of Shirley's passing. She lived a wonderful life and was a dear church friend and golf friend to mom, Ruth Lowdermilk. Many good memories of Shirley throughout the years. I know that she and mom are catching up and having some laughs in heaven! Prayers to Eddie, Gordon and all of the family. I know she will be missed.

Shirley and Grady were great friends of our family. We enjoyed many celebrations, camping and parties with the Fonville family. Shirley always made sure the events were documented with plenty of photographs. We all enjoyed the outdoors together, motorcycles, horses and plenty of fellowship with good food and camp fires.

Shirley was a good friend to my mom for most of her life and she was the photographer at my first wedding & did an excellent job!! She will truly be missed! May she rest in peace.
