Karen K. Borrowman, age 66, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 14, 2025, at her home in Barry, IL. She was born in Hannibal, MO on August 8, 1958, to Dale O. and Doris L. (Rethorn) Horner. She is survived by her loving partner, Larry Lewton; daughters, Kali Borrowman Swift and Kelsey (Erik Beranek) Borrowman; stepchildren, Melissa (Carlos) Quiroz, Gregory (Jordan) Lewton, Kurt (Katie) Lewton; six step grandchildren; sister, Terry (Carl) Egbers; and brothers, Dale W. Horner and Robert (Larissa) Horner.
Karen attended Truman State University in Kirksville, MO and was a proud member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. She completed her bachelor's degree in accounting at Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell, OK, then went on to pass the CPA exam at the University of Illinois. She launched her public accounting career at Gray Hunter Stenn in Quincy, IL in 1993, before joining her parents at Hannibal, MO in their successful Horner Tax Service. From there, she started her own accounting firm in Barry, IL in 1996. With the knowledge gained from her father, Dale Horner, she soon became an expert in Agriculture taxes. As she expanded into larger, complex Ag and Business returns, she never forgot her faithful, local clientele. She always tackled every return, no matter the size, with a sincere desire to be perfect on all details, a point that her mother, Doris Horner, drove home to Karen. She truly appreciated the many wonderful customers and friends that entrusted her with their tax returns.
Karen was preceded in death by her father, Dale Horner and mother, Doris Horner.
Private burial services will be held at Barry Park Lawn Cemetery for the immediate family, with prayer services provided by her church, Holy Family. Condolences may be sent to the family at [email protected] or to Larry Lewton at 31243 230th Street, Barry, IL 62312. Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry is handling the arrangements.
