Sophie Smith Obituary

Sophie "Sally" M. (Gregorzek) Smith, 102, of Newington, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 14, 2023. She was the beloved wife of the late John F. Smith. Born in New Britain, Sally was the daughter of the late Anthony and Hedwig Gregorzek. She graduated from New Britain High School in 1939 and was employed as secretary to the President at Landers, Frary and Clark in New Britain for 22 years. Sally was an avid golfer and bowler. She enjoyed the UConn Women's Basketball team and the Boston Red Sox. Sally is survived by her daughter Karen Place and her husband David of West Hartford, three grandchildren, Colleen Griffin, Amanda McCarthy and her husband Matthew, and Robert Place, her son-in-law, Jack Griffin, Sr., and many nieces and nephews. She loved her family dearly. She was predeceased by her daughter Kathleen Griffin, her grandson, Jack Griffin, Jr. and her five siblings. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, December 20th from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Duksa Family Funeral Homes at Newington Memorial, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Newington. She will be laid to rest with her husband in St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain. Memorial donations may be made to Annunciation Parish at St. Mary's Church, 626 Willard Ave., Newington, CT 06111.
