PATRICIA FELLERS
Patricia Carolyn Fellers, 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at Orono Commons in Orono, Maine. Born in Hays, Kansas, on May 27, 1939, Patricia, fondly known as Pat, was the daughter of Alfred and Berniece (Johnson) Gross.
A graduate of Hays High School, Class of 1957, Patricia pursued her passion for literature at Fort Hays State University. There, she earned both her Bachelor's degree in American Literature and a Master's degree in Writing and English Literature. Her devotion to education was unwavering, exemplified by her determination to obtain teaching credentials while lovingly raising her children.
In 1966, Pat embarked on her teaching career at Hays Elementary School, imparting knowledge and inspiration to her 6th grade students. Her journey continued at Hays Junior High School, where she taught 7th and 8th grade English. After taking a brief hiatus to dedicate time to her family, she returned to full-time teaching in 1978, inspiring high school students as an English teacher at Hays High School and serving as the Assistant Debating Forensics Coach. In 1993, she transitioned to Eldorado High School in Kansas, where she shared her passion for English for 14 years while also teaching at Eldorado Community College, until her well-deserved retirement in 2006.
Seeking new adventures, Patricia moved to Maine, where she embraced community life and educational opportunities. In 2007, she embarked on an enriching journey, accepting a position to teach English Composition in China for SIAS.
In her new home, Pat became an integral part of her community. Her contributions were many; she was a devoted member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church and an active volunteer with the Calais Regional Hospital Auxiliary. Her gentle spirit and generous heart shone brightly through her work at the hospital's Gift Shop, the Irene Chadbourne Ecumenical Food Pantry, and on the Vestry at St. Anne's.
Patricia found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. In her spare time, she delighted in reading, watching movies, and expressing herself through writing.
Pat's legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched as a teacher, mentor, and friend. Her warmth, intelligence, and unwavering kindness will be profoundly missed but forever cherished. As we remember Patricia Carolyn Fellers, let us celebrate her remarkable journey and the indelible impact she made on the world around her.
