Jane Cook Obituary

Jane C Cook

April 11, 1947 - March 22, 2024

Beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Janie passed away peacefully at her home in Alabama, surrounded by her sister and caregivers. She was 76.

Janie's life was marked by quiet resilience, fierce love, and a tireless work ethic. She was sharp, determined, and wonderfully stubborn. Even in hardship, she brought laughter, encouragement, and a sense of calm to those around her.

Born in Great Falls, Janie was adopted by Ralph and Grace Spitzer and grew up in Billings and Helena alongside her siblings, Johnny and Ruth. She graduated from Helena High School in 1965 and lived in Helena until she was 67.

Janie was a wonderful cook and needle artist, with an amazing green thumb. She raised two daughters, Grindl and Azarina, with partner Ken Cook. Jane worked as a grower at the State Nursery and a baker at The Sweet Grass Bakery. She also served as a dedicated 4-H leader for nearly two decades, mentoring countless youth in Lewis and Clark County.

Even after her Parkinson's diagnosis in 2006, Janie remained active, independent, and determined; reading, puzzling, and sewing daily.

In 2014, Janie moved to Alabama to live with daughter Grindl and her granddaughter, Caitlin. She quickly became a part of the local community, known for her handmade doll clothes, sharp wit, and kind spirit.

In 2021, Janie was preceded in death by her daughter, Azarina Zayere, a devastating loss she carried with strength, love and grace.

She is survived by her daughter, Grindl Weldon; granddaughter, Caitlin; sister, Ruth Brungardt (Jesse); nephews Mike and Ben; and grand-nephew Emerson.

A private family memorial was held on July 19, 2025, on McDonald Pass, where Janie's ashes were returned to her beloved Montana. Azarina's ashes were also spread at that time, bringing them home together, side by side, in peace.

Rest in peace Janie. What a kind, funny lady you were. I had the pleasure of working alongside Janie at a number of 4-H camps and got to enjoy her amazing cooking as well. Your work here on earth is done.

May you fly free in total comfort and love. Jane was unfailingly kind, clear and truly connected to whatever she was doing or whoever she was with. Tender mercies to her community and family.
