Joan Lucas Obituary

Joan Lucas

September 10, 1935 - April 11, 2025

Joan LaVonne Lucas, 89, of Findlay, Illinois, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025.

Born on September 10, 1935, in Decatur, Illinois, at St. Mary's Hospital, Joan was the daughter of George Edward and Margaret Hannah (Hebert) Mennel. After graduating from Stephen Decatur High School, she pursued her education at Millikin University before transferring to the University of Illinois.

On August 31, 1957, Joan married the love of her life, Joseph Hayes Lucas, in Decatur, Illinois. Together, they raised three kids and built a life full of love, laughter and purpose.

She served as the Village Treasurer of Findlay for over 20 years and in retirement was involved with sewing sleeping bags for people experiencing homelessness.

Joan radiated sunshine. She believed in people fiercely and found joy in the little things. Her positivity was contagious, her curiosity endless - she was fascinated by outer space, history, politics, genealogy, and whatever you were talking about that day. Joan listened deeply, encouraged often and celebrated everything. She was equal parts heart and grit – the type of person who made the world feel warmer just by being in it.

Joan is survived by her children: Jean Marie Carter (Steven) of Findlay, IL, Sandra Lea Wilkey (John) of Sarasota, FL, and Joseph Edward Lucas (Norma) of Collinsville, IL; grandchildren: Taylor Rosamond (Brandon), Erin Carter (fiancé Aaron Patton), John III (JJ) Wilkey, Jacqueline Wilkey, Joey Lucas, Sean Lucas (Tiffany), and Alicia Lucas and great-grandchildren: Carter, Charlie, and Cooper Rosamond.

She is also survived by her siblings: George Mennel (Yvonne) of Concord, CA, and her twin brother Eugene Mennel (Linda) of Decatur, IL and many nieces and nephews.

Joan's legacy is one of optimism, kindness, and boundless curiosity. She showed us how to look for the good, to stay interested in the world, and to laugh (truly laugh) often.

She really was very, very lucky. And we were luckier still.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Wright Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Findlay American Legion, 216 E South 2nd St., Findlay, IL 62534. Lockart-Green Funeral Home is assisting the family.
