A 1956 graduate of Abbeville High School, Gerald furthered his education at Greenwood College of Commerce, Class of 1960. He honorably served his country in the SC National Guard - Abbeville Unit with the 178th Field Signal Artillery Battalion.

For 20 years, Gerald was employed as a Division Manager at Riegel Textile Corporation, where he managed operations at the Ware Shoals, McCormick, Johnston, Whitmire and Fork Shoals plants. His leadership extended to his community as a member of the Abbeville County Council where he was Chairman for eight years, the Upper Savannah Council of Governments and the Donalds & Due West Water Authority. In May 2019, Gerald was inducted into the Abbeville County Hall of Fame an honor which was well deserved.
