Phyllis Mary Stevens, daughter of Ray and Ivy Spoor Stevens, was born in Waterman, Illinois on December 28, 1927. She spent her childhood on the family farm south of Shabbona. She was the second youngest of seven children, predeceased by her four brothers, Millard, Russell, James, and Robert, and her older sister, Betty Challand, and younger sister, Shirley McGinnis.
Phyllis attended Shabbona schools and after graduating in 1945, she began her career with General Electric in DeKalb, IL. During this time, she played on a women's softball team that competed against the famous Rockford Peaches. She transferred to Rohr Aircraft in San Diego in 1951 before returning to GE in DeKalb in 1953. In 1956, she transferred to GE in Denver, Colorado with her friend, Dawn Chapman, where she worked until 1970. Phyllis and Dawn built a lovely ranch home together on Exposition Ave. where they resided until 2017, when they moved to the
Eastern Star Masonic Retirement Campus.
A devout Christian, Phyllis was actively involved in several churches. After retiring from GE, she served as the secretary at Corona Presbyterian Church until 1993, and then as the part-time secretary at Grant Ave, United Methodist Church starting in 1998.
Phyllis cherished her many special friends in Denver, who were a significant part of her life. She actively participated in the Orchard Road Christian Center and The Reign Church, and she deeply valued her involvement in several Bible study groups. One particularly special group, her Thursday night Bible study, met for nearly 50 years.
The Exposition cul-de-sac, where Phyllis and Dawn lived for 40 years, held countless memories. It was a place of blossoming friendships, celebrated holidays, and frequent day trips to the mountains. Even after their move to Eastern Star these friendships continued, and Phyllis remained included in these gatherings. She loved Eastern Star, enjoying breakfasts and dinners at the Pic and making new acquaintances among the residents.
Over the years, members of the Stevens family have continued to follow Phyllis to Colorado. Phyllis loved the mountains, music and fellowship, playing the guitar, banjo, and ukulele at gatherings.
Deeply committed to her beliefs, she actively supported the Republican Party. She cherished the letters she received from Republican Presidents Bush and Trump. She also was an avid Broncos fan.
Phyllis spent her final months at AltaVita Assisted Living, where she made new friends and deeply appreciated the care provided by Mary, Gemma, and Wanda. Phyllis passed away peacefully on January 25, 2025. She will be remembered for her smile, easy going personality, and spirited sense of humor. We celebrate her well-lived life and the love she shared.
Memorial services will be held at Eastern Star Masonic Campus, 2445 S Quebec St, Denver, CO in the main building chapel March 1st, 2025 at 10:30am.
We invite you to share your special memories of Phyllis on her memorial through the guestbook. Thank you ALL for sharing your sweet and precious memories.
It's been such a joy to read them all, and see your very special photos of my Aunt Phyllis.
We were thrilled to move out to Colorado just 7 years ago. It meant that we got to spend a lot more time with Aunt Phyllis. She was my favorite aunt- so full of life, a great jokester, so generous and caring, so strong and vivacious, loving and kind! She had a strong and lasting faith that inspired us all
Dementia brought her, and us all, many challenges in her last year with us, as she moved to Longmont in March of 2024.
We know she is with the Lord and reunited with her family and no longer wrestling with the disease. We are so thankful for that, for the loving staff at Alta Vita Assisted Living and so blessed that she was in our lives. We miss her. May she rest in peace

I met Phyllis at Linda Nuss' Wednesday Bible Study. What I remember about Phyllis was her great sense of humor and total love of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I loved listening to her stories of how God delivered her from so many interesting and sometimes serious situations. She had a way of telling them that made us laugh. I admire her faith and trust in the Lord. She will be greatly missed. Phyllis, until we meet again in heaven, rest in the loving arms of Jesus ❤

I first met Phyllis at a Bible study in her and Dawn’s home back in the early 70’s and have so many memories of the fun and interesting things we did and/or were involved in together over the years. There were the weekly Thursday night Bible studies, retreats in the mountains, playing par 3 golf, painting the trim on their house on Exposition Ave., and more recently enjoying taco and Thanksgiving dinners with her neighbors Linda and Perry. She was fun, adventuresome, always ready to talk politics, and most importantly to share her faith in the Lord Jesus with others. She will truly be missed.

I met Phyllis at a Dove’s Thursday evening Bible study in her old house in 1979 on a trip passing through Denver. We were packed like sardine into her small living room and she was leading us in worship with her guitar. There was a sense of freedom in this informal group. Holy Spirit was present and the women were eagerly sharing what Jesus had been doing in their lives! These women were excited about their new faith and hungry for more! What a beautiful memory!
I would see Phyllis off and on over the years on subsequent trips to Denver, but we got better acquainted many years later when I ultimately moved to Denver in 2020. She was in her 90’s, but her faith and love for the Lord Jesus was only burning more brightly! Her prayers were powerful and full of faith! I would call her when I needed prayer. She was an inspiration and blessing to me!
She was considering hosting a Bible study in her home and really wanted me and Kay to come to it. She was eager for us to meet some of her other dear friends, who lived near Centennial. That was quite a distance to drive, but we agreed to go with her at least once to meet her friends. We ended up attending that study about two years, meeting her lovely friends and being greatly blessed by the Bible study which wonderfully enriched our lives! Phyllis was a vital member of that study, even in her nineties! She would give testimonies and words of exhortation to these friends who deeply loved and admired her, and always celebrated and honored Phyllis on her birthdays with appropriate fanfare!
Thank you Phyllis, for the indelible blessings you left on my life and the lives of many others! We look forward to our great Heavenly Reunion and an Eternity of sweet fellowship together!

For years I was a part of the Thursday night Bible study mentioned in her obituary, and that is how I came to know Phyllis. Many of the meetings were held in her and Dawn’s home where we were always greeted with a big smile and warm hug! Phyllis radiated the love of Jesus. We all appreciated her playing her guitar and leading us in worship. I will always remember Phyllis for her laughter, embracing personality and love for Jesus. Kay Yost

A truly amazing lady that I got to know when living in Exposition Ave. Such a fun lady to be with, I admired her strength immensely. So glad I got to meet you and spend time with you whenever I was in Denver. I also enjoyed our trip to see the Rockies. RIP Phyllis. I know you are watching ❤
