Michael Griffis Obituary

Beloved brother, Michael Eugene Griffis, age 75, passed away in his sleep from heart issues on March 20, 2025. Mike (to his friends and family) was born December 30, 1949, to Donald and Esther Griffis of Jerome, Michigan who are both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Debbie in 2022.
He is survived by his sister, Annette (Mark) Andersen of Traverse City; aunts, Sharon Lathers, Mary Lathers; a niece, Maren; nephews, Jorgen (Elena), Ragnar (Lydia); grandnieces, Rosie and Katrina; grandnephew, Rolland; and many cousins.
Mike's life was adventurous. He played tournament chess for most of his life. To try and win a game with Mike was a fun (and futile) challenge to family members. He graduated from North Adams High School in 1968, served four years in the U.S. Air Force, then graduated from M.S.U. with a math and science teaching degree. He then headed to Togo, Africa in the Peace Corps where he taught high school math and science for two years. He hiked the Appalachia Trail twice. After retirement from a 23-year career teaching in Florida, he returned to Pittsford, Michigan and lived with and helped care for our post-stroke mother until her death in 2015 and remained there until his recent passing.
He will be remembered fondly for his sense of humor, tender heart, resilience in life's challenges, and loyal caring.
His memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at the Hampton Funeral Home in Hillsdale beginning 3:00 P.M. with Pastor Mike Prince officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation on Sunday, April 27th from 2:00 P.M. until the time of the service. Following the service the family invites you to join them for a luncheon at the Jerome Community Building (the old schoolhouse). Michael's urn will be Interned at the Jerome Cemetery at later date. If sending flowers, small bouquets are nicer for people to take home. Mike, you will always be held lovingly in our hearts and memories and will be missed deeply. Keep the porch light burning for us.
