Frederick Truog Obituary

Frederick Saunders Truog

October 9, 1940 - May 7, 2025

Kansas City, Missouri - Frederick Saunders Truog passed away peacefully on May 7, 2025, at Bishop Spencer Place. Fred was born on October 9, 1940, in Houston, TX, the second of three brothers, to Marjorie Lee Truog and Daniel Saunders Truog. In 1942, the family moved from Houston back to Kansas City, where he lived for the remainder of his life. He graduated from Southwest High School in Kansas City, attended Trinity University in San Antonio, TX for one year before completing his degree in Architecture at Kansas State University. The semester he spent at the School of Fine Arts at Fontainebleau outside of Paris was an important influence throughout his life.

From the age of four Fred knew that he wanted to be an architect. He was fascinated by the built environment and was always quick to point out design flaws or ways in which a space could work better. In 1972 Fred began Frederick S. Truog and Associates Architects. Over a long career Fred designed homes, offices, schools, churches, academic buildings and athletic facilities. Some of his favorite projects were the Crestwood Condominiums, original homes in the Kansas City area, the restored chapel at Bacone University in Oklahoma, the science building at Ottawa University in KS, and the library and classroom expansion at the Barstow School where both sons attended school. In 1983 Fred was President of the KC Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. His designs won numerous lighting awards for his creative use of indirect lighting and natural light in spaces.

For many years Fred volunteered for Friends of Sacred Structures (FOSS) to help preserve churches in the Kansas City area. From 2000 to 2010 he served on the Board of the Elmwood Cemetery helping to preserve the Armour Chapel and to bring people to the Cemetery for Memorial Day.

Fred was a beloved brother, husband, parent, grandparent and friend who made the best "dad jokes," loved making art, and will be missed by all who knew him and he made it his business to know everyone around him. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Susan, sons Toby and Oliver, daughters-in-law Teri and Sara, cherished grandchildren, Harper, Finn, Daniel and Nina, brother Robert, and nieces Mary Lee Duff (Michael) and Meg Grandcolas (Gary). He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother David, and sister-in-law, Mary Jo.

A Visitation for all will be held Saturday, May 31 from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. at Bishop Spencer Place, 4301 Madison Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64111. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to FOSS (www.fosskc.org) or Elmwood Cemetery (www.elmwoodcemeterykc.org).

I´m a flutist & teacher. I´m highly trained on the modern flute. And Pan Pipes was not my instrument; until I met Fred. Honestly, I was skeptical to teach ourselves at first, but he followed me through our journey to learn. And we had fun playing together. We both loved the sound. I really miss our lessons. I remember somehow sharing how we met our spouses, & he spoke with a spark in his eye about you, Susan. It was admirable & inspirational for the state of marriage for me. I learned a lot from Fred, and I am very grateful to have known him.

I had a fun conversation with Fred one day about 15 years ago regarding his restaurant list. He said when he and Susan wanted to go out for a meal on any particular day/evening they could never think of where to go, so Fred started to make a list of restaurants as they popped into his head. Going forward when they were headed out for a meal they could reference their list to jog their memory. Well, I thought this was brilliant because I shared their same experience, so I started my own list on my phone. I still have a list to this day and I think of Fred every time I pull it up.
I have only fun memories of Uncle Fred growing up with Toby, Oliver, Mary Lee, and Meg. He will be missed! Becky Stevens

Susan and family, Fred was a valuable member of FOSS for many years. We have missed him of late but know he was well taken care of in your hands. Thank you for offering donations to FOSS. Any contributions in Fred's name will be used to help fund the churches we support. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time!

Fred was one in a million. Laura and I feel so lucky to have grown up around Fred (and Susan), playing the backyard with the boys and Fred and listening to the Royals games. He will be missed. We love you all!!!
