Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Law Enforcement Officer, Community Servant, and Friend to All Who Knew Him.
John Victor Martinez, a devoted public servant, respected law enforcement officer, and cherished family man, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2025, in Salt Lake City, Utah, following a courageous battle with kidney cancer. He was 71.
Born on April 20, 1954, in Embudo, New Mexico, to Ermalinda Gonzales and Crisoforo Martinez, John was lovingly raised by his sister, Marie Hendricks, whom he affectionately called "Mom." From an early age, he embodied a spirit of service and compassion that would define his life.
On November 9, 1973, John married the love of his life, Aileen Laughter. Their bond was later solemnized in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple on May 1, 1975, sealing their union for time and all eternity. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, family, and unwavering devotion.
John dedicated his life to serving others both professionally and personally. A steadfast pillar of the Bear Lake County community, his contributions were both numerous and far-reaching. His professional legacy is a testament to his tireless work ethic and deep commitment. For over four decades, John served Bear Lake County with distinction. He was a committed member of the Bear Lake Ambulance Service for nearly 39 years, including multiple terms as president. He joined Bear Lake Search & Rescue in 1979 and served for 46 years, often leading as commander. As an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), he provided care and comfort for 39 years, and his distinguished law enforcement career spanned an impressive 40 years. In addition, John led countless community service initiatives for more than two decades, always striving to uplift and improve the lives of those around him.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was a man of many passions and deep family values. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and cruising in his Mustang and Corvette. He found joy in riding his Harley-Davidson, collecting Hot Wheels and coins, and watching cop shows. A lifelong enthusiast of mathematics, he maintained a sharp mind and curious spirit throughout his life. Above all, John treasured time spent with his beloved wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
John is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 52 years, Aileen Martinez; and their five children: Lisa (Jason) Williams of Montpelier, Idaho; Leslie (Tim) Wolff of Sugar Land, Texas; Daniel Martinez of Franklin, Idaho; Tyson (Stephanie) Martinez of Pocatello, Idaho; and Kayla (Whitney) Martinez of Montpelier, Idaho. He also leaves behind eleven grandchildren: Brennen (Tylyn) Williams, Shaylin (Dillon) Jensen, Taylor (Clay) Martinez, Reese Martinez, Kenzie Martinez, Tessa Wolff, Malia Wolff, Zackary Wolff, Charly Martinez, Jase Martinez, and Raddox Martinez; and five great-grandchildren: Krew Williams, Swayde Williams, Tate Williams, Millie Jensen, and baby Humphreys (due to arrive in September).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ermalinda and Crisoforo; his sister, Kate; his brother, Rudy; and other beloved family members.
John's legacy is one of selfless service, unwavering integrity, and boundless love. As a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he held many leadership roles and exemplified faith in action. His passing leaves a profound void in the Bear Lake County community and in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.
A viewing will be held on Monday, September 1, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Schwab Matthews Mortuary. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, September 2, at 12:00 p.m. at the Montpelier 1st/4th Ward Chapel, located at 485 South 7th Street, Montpelier, Idaho, with a viewing prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Montpelier Cemetery.
The Martinez family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered support during this time. They especially wish to thank the compassionate doctors, nurses, and staff at the Huntsman Cancer Institute for their exceptional care throughout John's journey. His life will be remembered with deep admiration, enduring pride, and unending love.
