July 16, 1947 - July 25, 2025. With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother and loving wife, Karen Kay Pickett. Karen was born in Fairbury, Nebraska on July 16, 1947 and passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025. She resided with her husband of 54 years, Ron Pickett, in McAlpin, Florida at the time of her passing. She is preceded in death by her parents, H.T. "Jay" and Bonnie Sydow, and survived by her husband Ron, her children John and Molly, her grandchildren Owen and Finley, and her two siblings, Kris and Danny.
Karen attended the University of Nebraska and worked as a Newborn Intensive Care Nurse and a pediatric nurse for many years in North Carolina. She continued to work with children and served as an elementary school nurse for several years while in Nashville, TN and in Florida. Karen loved music and was passionate about playing her piano, which she played throughout her life. In her retirement, she learned to quilt and enjoyed spending time sewing with her local quilting friends.

Karen and I met at work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery in Chapel Hill, NC, in the early 70's. A lifetime of friendship followed, all across the country as one or the other of us moved with our families. She was a kindred spirit in many ways and one of the best RN's with whom I ever worked. Our babies played together, and thanks to Karen I had some recipes to learn to cook when I married. Her wisdom, wit, and kindness to my family and me are irreplaceable, and I hold our friendship forever in my heart. May the Lord bless and keep you, Karen. Amen.

I've known Karen since 1957, when I was 5. My husband Pat had known her his entire life. She was a classmate of my sister Connie and Pat's brother Randy. The entire Sydow family held a special place in both of our lives. With Karen's passing it feels as if we have lost a big part of our childhood. We send our caring thoughts to Karen's entire family. She was indeed a very special woman.

Working with Karen was a privilege! I learned so much from her in the clinic. She loved those kiddos!
One special lady! May you rest peacefully.

I am so very sorry to hear of your passing. I will never forget the kindness you showed during our time at Five Points Elementary. Mom says you asked about me all the time at the quilt guild. May your family find peace in their cherished memories and wrap themselves in the warmth of your quilts.

Condolences to all the family. Almost 50 years ago I was fortunate enough to work with Karen in N.Carolina. Karen was a gracious woman and excellent nurse.
