DAROLD LETO Obituary

DAROLD KEY WEST - LETO PHILIP LETO SR. Darold Philip Leto, Sr., affectionately known as "Papa Leto," a proud fifth-generation Conch, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2026, at the age of 82. Born and raised in Key West, Florida, Darold was a respected painting contractor whose business, Leto's Painting-fondly known throughout the community as "Papa's Painting"-became synonymous with integrity, craftsmanship, and pride.

A man of deep faith and unwavering devotion, Darold centered his life around what mattered most: his family, his church, his friendships, his love of football, and the timeless music of Elvis Presley. Above all, his family was his greatest joy and proudest accomplishment. He shared 59 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Elmira (Almeda) Leto, building a life rooted in love, strength, and commitment. Together they raised four children: Darold Jr., Tanya, Ashley, and Raymond.

His grandchildren were the light of his life and the legacy he treasured most. Nothing brought him greater happiness than being present for them, cheering them on, and watching them grow into their own paths. He is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Writer, Ocean, Lucy, Leon, Mateo, and Nicki, each of whom carried a special place in his heart and proudly called him "Papa."

Darold cherished his siblings and spoke of them often with affection and pride. He is survived by Michael Leto, Esmeralda Alvarez, Linda Marston, Sarah Vega, and Mary Vidal. He now reunites in eternal peace with his beloved brother, Jack Vaughn. Darold also held deep pride in his large extended family of cousins, nieces, and nephews, more than 58 in all, each a meaningful part of his life.

To know Darold was to know loyalty, laughter, and lifelong friendship. He formed bonds that endured decades and created memories that will be retold for generations. Among those friendships were Gregory Curry, Hugh Morgan, Ben Gibson, Wayne Goldstein, and many others he cherished deeply. He shared an especially remarkable brotherhood with his best friends, Donald Lee and Joaquin Disdier, affectionately known together as the "DL Boys."

For 57 years, Darold was a faithful member of Fifth Street Baptist Church, where he served honorably as a Deacon. His love for the Lord guided his life, and his quiet strength, generosity, and servant's heart left a lasting imprint on his church family and community.

Football was not simply a pastime for Darold, it was a calling. After playing the sport himself, he devoted more than 40 years to mentoring young athletes, shaping not only strong players but strong men. As co-founder of the Junior Football League and Head Coach at Mary Immaculate High School, he led the Mariners to a state championship and earned recognition from The Miami Herald as "Coach of the Year." Known for his selflessness, Darold was often seen driving his pickup truck to ensure every player had a ride to practice or a chance to step onto the field. His influence reached far beyond the game, teaching discipline, character, and perseverance.

In 2025, the City of Key West honored his extraordinary dedication to youth by proclaiming a day in his name, an enduring testament to the countless lives he shaped and uplifted.

Darold also found great joy in the music of Elvis Presley, whose songs were the soundtrack of his life. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, he traveled to Memphis to visit Graceland, a memory he held dear.

Though his accomplishments were many, Darold will be remembered most for the way he made people feel valued, supported, and loved. His legacy is one of faith, humility, leadership, and unconditional love. The impact of his life will continue to be felt in his family, his players, his church, and the community he served so faithfully.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at Fifth Street Baptist Church, 1311 Fifth Street, Key West, Florida 33040. Burial will follow at the City Cemetery, with a reception afterward at the church. Reverend Ron Lentine will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, a scholarship will be established in Darold's honor to support a young football athlete pursuing a college education. Donations may be made by check to Key West High School.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, coach, mentor, and friend, Darold Philip Leto, Sr. leaves behind a legacy that will endure for generations. His life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and his love everlasting.
