Robert Altman Obituary

With much sadness, we announce the passing of Judge Robert "Bob" Theodore Altman, a devoted husband, loving father, uncle and grandfather, a pillar of justice and a respected member of the legal community. Bob departed this world on Thursday, June 13, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of legal brilliance and a deep impact on all who knew and worked with him.
Born on August 2nd, 1939 in Brooklyn New York to Leon and Lillian Altman, Bob earned a Bachelors of Arts from UCLA, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and Highest Honors, in 1961. He then earned his law degree from Harvard University in 1964, graduating summa cum laude. After law school, he moved to Los Angeles marrying Caroline, his beloved wife of 58 years. After working at Loeb & Loeb, he found great passion in his career as a deputy district attorney from 1969-1980. After eleven years of service, he was appointed to the Superior Court bench by Mayor Jerry Brown and presided over countless criminal and civil cases for twenty years with fairness, compassion, and a profound sense of duty. In 2000, he began a third career as a mediator for ADR Services where he settled civil suits with both tenacity and integrity. He had a keen sense of the legal system and was highly adept at resolving even the most complex cases.
Bob's kindness, loyalty, intelligence and sense of humor enriched our lives immeasurably. He left a mark on the hearts not only on his family and his colleagues, but on all those fortunate enough to have known him.
In his personal life, Bob was avid for adventure. He traveled the world with his wife and friends, documenting his experiences with beautiful photographs. and sharing stories of his time abroad. He loved romancing his wife; spending time with his children and grandkids; watching sports (especially college basketball); reading a good book; walking his dog; and indulging in a midnight snack.
He leaves behind his wife, Caroline; brother Michael (Robyn Altman); Susie Altman (Steve Kosach) Cat Kurtz (Doug Kurtz); grandchildren, Kieran Kosach, Connor Kosach, and Max Kurtz; nieces and nephew; and a host of friends, colleagues, and admirers who will forever cherish his memory. For the last couple of years, Bob received the most excellent care from Rosa Morales, Jayvi Baun and Edward Templo who added immeasurably to his quality of life. His legacy of fairness, kindness, and unwavering dedication to justice is an inspiration. The loss of Bob is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit will endure in the principles and the values he upheld, and the photographs and memories he made throughout his remarkable life.
A memorial service to celebrate Bob Altman's life will be held at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery on Wednesday, June, 19 2024 at 10am with a reception at his home to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Panthera and Bet Tzedek Legal Services in reflection of his commitment to the preservation of wildlife and access to legal representation for all.
Bob Altman may be gone, but he will forever live on in our hearts and memories.

Bob Altman was one of the giants of the legal profession, and excelled in everything aspect of the law in which he practiced. It was a pleasure to work along side him in the District Attorney's Office, and a privilege to appear before him as a judge. He will be greatly missed.
