Janet Hughes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 20, 2023.
On Tuesday, October 3, 2023, Janet Lockhart Hughes, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away in Cresskill, NJ. Janet was born in Philadelphia on June 29, 1935, to Frank and Janet (Claflin). The oldest of three daughters, she attended the Agnes Irwin School in Rosemont PA and Smith College; after which she worked at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. After marrying Jim Hughes in 1959 the couple moved to Tenafly NJ where they raised their three children, Jim, Anne and Sandra.

Janet loved to travel and was always planning her next adventure, traveling with family and friends to six continents and all 50 states. She was an avid gardener and reader. Janet was an active member of the Presbyterian Church at Tenafly and spent much of her time volunteering there. She helped in the Tenafly school systems and American Field Service. FISH was a particular favorite of hers; it was an organization that helped with rides and errands for the elderly and infirm. She kept her mind sharp writing papers as a member of the Willow Study Group and doing the NY Times crossword puzzles - in ink.

Janet was preceded in death by her husband James, her parents, Frank and Janet, as well as her two sisters Katherine (Lockhart) Hertel and Deborah (Lockhart) Wilson. She is survived by her three children, Sandra Conklin (E. Foster) of Norwood, NJ; Anne Hughes (Sean Jeffery) of Dumont, NJ; and Jim Hughes (Malinda) of Ellicott City, MD and her five grandchildren, Brian Vargas, Caroline Hughes, Andrea Hughes, Foster Conklin, and Janet Conklin.

A memorial service will be held at The Presbyterian Church at Tenafly, 55 Magnolia Avenue, Tenafly, NJ at 11am on Saturday, October 28, 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Anne Opie Hughes Scholarship Endowment Fund at the University of Maryland School of Nursing (http://nursing.umaryland edu/hughesscholarship) or to Doctors Without Borders (www.doctorswithout borders.org). Services were handled by Barrett Leber Funeral Home, Tenafly.
