John Hurst Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 28, 2025.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Captain John A. Hurst, a beloved Pilot, Husband, Father, and friend to everyone he met.

John passed away on January 30th, of a massive coronary at the age of 70.

Captain Hurst devoted his life to aviation, starting his life and love of flying at age 15. He served as a trusted and skilled pilot for multiple small airlines before landing at Aircal, which later merged with American Airlines. He continued that career for another 35 years, retiring in 2019. His dedication to his craft, unmatched professionalism, and unwavering commitment to safety earned him the respect of colleagues and passengers alike.

Born in Tacoma, Washington, on December 29, 1954, John developed a love for flying at an early age. He knew by the age of 8 that the skies would become his home away from home. He earned his type ratings on a variety of aircraft, including the VR-146, Boeing 757, 767, and 777, BAE-146, Douglas DC-9, Fokker F-27, and Swearingen SA-227. His passion for aviation led him to a distinguished career that spanned 50 years. Over the years, he flew countless passengers to destinations across the world, always with a calm and reassuring presence.

Outside of his professional life, John enjoyed spending time with his wife Cheryl Hurst; brother Rick Hurst (wife Jeanne Hurst); daughters Shawn Hurst, Melina Palmer (husband Aaron Palmer); his bonus daughters Selina Woody, Alaina Morrison (husband Bodie); and nine grandchildren, along with close friends. He was known for his humility, kind heart, and ability to make those around him feel special and valued.

His legacy will live on through the many lives he impacted, both in the skies and on the ground.

A celebration of life will be held on April 13, 2025, at 11911 252nd Ave East, Buckley, WA 98321, at the Hangar of Wyatt & Dawn Cook, from 2-4 PM, where we will celebrate his remarkable life and contributions to his career and community service. In lieu of flower arrangements, you may bring or send cards or a plant in his honor to be planted on the grounds of the home that is currently being built in Lenore, Idaho.

Captain Hurst, Johnny, Dad, Papa John, loyal friend-you will be deeply missed, but your memory will soar in the hearts of those who knew you.

Blue skies, John. We hope you are watching over us, knowing you were loved by everyone.

The time we got was short but meaningful! He was a very genuine person. A kindness that filled the room and a presence that was warm and welcoming! River Pointe Lane definitely feels your absence, John! You will be missed!

Dear Cheryl, I know how much the love you two shared enriched both of your lives, a true yin/yan partnership. The deep love and mutual admiration you had for each other was clear to everyone who was lucky enough to know you both.
