Joseph Schaab Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 11, 2025.
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joseph F. Schaab, who departed this life on May 25, 2025, at the age of 88.

Born to Irene and Francis Schaab, Joe was a lifelong resident of Amherst, NY. He served honorably in the United States Army and was a talented artist and master craftsman. As the founder and operator of Apex Masonry, Joe left his mark on countless homes and buildings throughout the community with his skilled brickwork and dedication.

Joe was a cherished son, brother, nephew, cousin, father, uncle, partner, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his brothers Carl (Gerry), Francis (Peggy), and Jimmy (Carolyn); daughters Pam (Pax) Mahle and Katie Schaab; nephews Carl (Lisa), Jimmy (Von), and Jason Schaab; nieces Donna (Ken) Paulin, Michelle (Mike) Scott; numerous great-nieces and nephews and cousins; his beloved companion Jo Anne Jansen; "step-on" children John Baron (Jill Galway), Kelly Jansen (Don Hayes), and Chris Jansen; and grandchildren Dylan, Isabella, and Grayson. He is also remembered with gratitude by his devoted caretaker Leah Kern-Potter and many lifelong friends.

Joe's home was more than a place - it was a hub of connection, joy, and tradition. Known for its festive gatherings, backyard bonfires, garden paths, and the ever-flowing tap, his homestead welcomed all. His Easter egg hunts, a tradition for over 50 years, brought generations together in celebration.

He will be remembered for his artistic spirit, sharp wit, true grit, unwavering honesty, generosity, strong will, and his gift for storytelling. Above all, Joe will be remembered for his big heart and his role as beloved "Papa Joe" to many. Joe, your spirit lives on in the lives you touched. You were a gift to us all. We love you, and we'll see you on the other side.

A private Celebration of Life will be held with close family and friends.

In Joe's memory, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
