Mark McCue Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 7, 2024.
Mark Edward McCue left this earthly plane on December 24, 2022 to join his loved ones on the other side.

Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1951, Mark was the second oldest of four sons born to Ed and Betty McCue after WWII. From a young age, he showed an interest in academics and graduated from Trenton High School in 1969. He then attended Wayne State University and became first in his family tree to graduate from college. His parents were so proud.

Mark's life-long quest for knowledge was unwavering. He took one-off classes, delving into subjects he found fascinating. That included his appreciation for all kinds of music, which led to teaching himself guitar before online tutorials were available.

Where Mark truly excelled was strategic gaming. Backgammon, Risk, and other board games fired him up. But nothing compared to his passion for chess. He joined chess clubs and embarked on tedious correspondence games where each move was mailed between opponents worldwide. He embraced internet chess clubs when they sprouted up!

He loved teaching young ones how to play the game. Mark's nieces recall sitting in their grandmother's house in the 1970s learning how to think three moves ahead. Neighbors recall him setting up a chess board on a table with chairs at the neighborhood block party, teaching curious kids how to play.

While Mark would have been a fantastic teacher in Michigan, he ventured to central Texas where he began a 35-year career at Southwest Airlines. The SWA team became his family until his retirement in 2020. As a former co-worker said after hearing about his passing, "Know that he was loved." Loved ones will miss Mark's contagious belly laughs and the twinkle in his eye.

Mark was preceded in death by his father Ed Kane McCue, mother Elizabeth Mae McCue, and brothers Gordon Jon McCue and Michael Scott McCue. He is survived by his brother Richard James McCue and his children.

In celebration of Mark's life, we invite you to donate to The Knight School, a San Antonio-based chess school for kids ages 3 to 18. He would be thrilled to know that his legacy of learning and gaming will live on through a new generation.

My condolences on Mark's passing. He was boisterous, his laughter was contagious. I remember seeing him the break room reading the newspaper. He always made time to talk with everyone. There was only 1 Mark of his grand character. Rest in peace Mark. I'm sure you are playing chess in heaven and teaching the art of the game!

My cousin, Mark, is the one who got me interested in chess. We played correspondence chess back in the day when each move came on a small postcard and we moved paper pieces in a multi page book. I always knew he was smart, and was sad when he moved to Texas.

The last time I seen my uncle Mark he beat me at chess 3 games in a row in just a few moves. He was very smart. I hope he had a great life.

My uncle was a smartie, always curious and learning. No matter how many times I come across these things, they always remind me of my uncle Mark: San Antonio, Southwest Airlines, the game of chess, dark beards, and big, boisterous laughs.

My uncle Mark played chess and other board and card games with me growing up. I also remember riding in his little blue car (a VW, maybe?) to Detroit Tigers baseball games and Red Wings hockey games while he and my dad predicted winners and complained about parking. Most of all, I know he loved his mother and father and take comfort in knowing he's reunited with them now-- eating sugar cookies and watching reruns of M*A*S*H*. Rest in peace.
