Mary Ellin Mealey Allen Frohman, originally from Trenton, New Jersey, passed away on March 5, 2025, at home in
Golden, Colorado, surrounded by all of her children and many loving family members. She was 90 years of age, born on June 1, 1934, the daughter of the late Thomas A. Mealey and Mary Claire Hunt Mealey and is predeceased by her husband, Dr. Bertram Herbert Frohman, and brothers, Thomas A. and James D. Mealey.
Mary Ellin held close relationships with her children. Her profound connections with each one of them run deep, are full of love and will continue to live on and be celebrated. The matriarch of our family, she was the forever loving Mom of Patricia Allen Hillen (Jack Haley) of West Chester, PA; Bill Allen (Helen Lao) of Corona Del Mar, CA; Mark Allen (Donna Boyd) of Rockwall, TX; Maureen (Coty, Barnard) Allen of Nashville, TN; and Kathleen Allen (Malcolm Aylett) of
Golden, Colorado.
She was the adoring grandmother of 13 grandchildren - Kirsten Coty, Abbey Hillen Lee (Patrick), Sean Coty, Stephen Hillen (Cindy), Blair Hillen (Celeste), Brook, Carson, Logan and Nicholas Lao, Jill Boyd (Robby), Celeste Boyd Johnson (Daniel), Jared Coty, and Jesse Barnard. And she was the proud great-grandmother of Jordan, Jackson, Jameson, Declan, Colton, Tanner, Parker, Meghan, Zachary and Jack.
After graduating from Cathedral High School, Mary Ellin earned a scholarship and graduated from The St. Francis School of Nursing in Trenton, NJ. She would spend most of her life (full-time early on, part-time later) pursuing a long standing devoted career as an RN, specializing in IV Therapy and eventually working as an outpatient oncology nurse.
As she built her family, Long Beach Island became a second home, where she commuted to work on the weekends. She would return to LBI years later for many summers, vacationing with her children and their families. Mary Ellin loved the big family gatherings - opening her house in Yardley, PA on holidays such as Christmas Eve, Hanukkah, and Easter. She was famous for her back-yard Easter egg hunts. She also traveled extensively and was most fond of places like Italy, China and Israel. She enjoyed listening to most kinds of music, was an avid life-long reader and took time tending to her gardens. A master quilter, her quilts were always these beautiful handmade gifts given to family members on special occasions. She liked to gamble, playing the slots in Atlantic City or at Black Hawk. And she loved her cards. Poker, pinochle and in her California days, she entertained and played bridge with her dear friends.
In her last years, one could find her hanging out on the patio sipping Kim Crawford (Kimmy), listening to music at the Eddy, or going for long rides with the dogs to see the snow, the aspens or for weekend getaways to the mountains in Salida or Frisco.
The Allen family is grateful for the many caregivers who were by Mary Ellin's side along the way, but mostly to Mary Chapa, who provided unwavering, compassionate and dedicated care until the end of her days.
If you knew our Mom/our Nana, you knew she led a large and unique life, mostly on her own terms. She will be missed beyond measure. Thoughts and prayers. xo
