Roland Yong Obituary

Roland Anthony Yong passed away on April 13, 2025, in Stewartsville, New Jersey, at the age of 86. Born on September 4, 1938 in Singapore, Roland lived a full and energetic life. Five decades were lived in America.

Roland was the third of four siblings and the last to leave this earth. He now joins his beloved parents, Julian and Lucy, as well as his sisters Juliana Manee and Tina and brother Arthur. Roland's legacy continues through his three children Dominga, Amris, and Alex. Roland loved his four grandchildren Carter, Martin, Jaci and Andrew.

Taking his vocation seriously, Roland knew his professional role as a doorman was to be in reliable service to others. One outstanding moment happened immediately after the events of September 11, 2001. At the age of 63, Roland walked from his home in Queens all the way to the Upper East Side of Manhattan. As there was no subway service, walking was the only way. With this straightforward choice, he honored his responsibilities as a trusted doorman. In a time of fear and uncertainty, Roland's presence brought comfort to the residents who were both grateful and amazed by his dedication.

Outside of work, Roland found joy in simple pleasures. He found gardening relaxing and would sometimes paint bricks to create garden highlights. He enjoyed DIY projects and finding creative solutions around the home. He also liked to fish, appreciating the calm it brought. He had a lifelong affinity for soccer which began as a child in Singapore. He always said he liked the simple and globally recognized rules of soccer.

A memorial gathering to honor Roland's life will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Kearns Funeral Home, located at 103-33 Lefferts Boulevard in Queens NY 11419. Church service will be in the morning, beginning at 10:30 AM at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 108-43 Sutphin Boulevard in Queens NY 11435. For those unable to attend in person, the morning mass as well as the afternoon gathering will be livestreamed so that family and friends from afar may join in remembrance.
