Irmtraud Hermanson Obituary

Irmtraud K. Hermanson
Irmtraud K. (Sattler) Hermanson, 80, of Old Saybrook, CT passed away as a result of a stroke on Thursday, June 19, 2025 at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, CT. Irmy, as she was known to everyone, was born in Germany on March 17, 1945. She is survived by her sister Brigitte Steeg of Germany; her brother-in-law Bill Hermanson and his wife Mary Lou Hermanson, both of East Lyme, CT and her sister-in-law Cheryl (Hermanson) Olsson and her husband Lennart Olsson both of Linkoping, Sweden. She also leaves behind her nieces and nephews Magnus, Katie and Erik Olsson; and Eric Hermanson, his wife Erika Hermanson and their daughters Jade and Jordyn. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Richard ("Dick") Hermanson. Irmy lived in Germany until the age of 20 when she moved to Washington, DC and began her career in Information Technology with The Hartford Insurance Co. It was here that she met her future husband, Richard. In the late 1970's, Irmy and Dick moved to South Windsor, CT where they both continued their careers with The Hartford. After she and Dick had retired, they moved to Old Saybrook, CT and were able to enjoy a slower pace of life and to travel the world pursuing their shared passions of sports, good wine and fine dining. Even after moving to the CT shoreline, Irmy and Dick maintained their longstanding membership at Wethersfield Country Club where they played golf frequently and had made many friends. In addition to golf, Irmy was a dedicated fan of all sports – but especially World Cup Soccer, Formula 1 Racing, UConn basketball and the Washington Redskins (they would always remain the "Redskins" to Irmy). She often displayed an almost encyclopedic knowledge of what was going on in the world of sports and was known to frequently get up at 2:00 in the morning so she could watch live coverage of a big soccer game or Formula 1 race going on in some other part of the world.
In her younger years, Irmy was a gourmet cook. For many years she hosted family gatherings at Thanksgiving and Christmas and always amazed everyone with her sensational culinary skills. In her later years, after beating cancer on three separate occasions, she was content to let other people do most of the cooking and she became a frequent patron of many local restaurants along the shoreline where she made a whole new circle of friends.
The family would like to thank the aids, nurses and doctors at Middlesex Hospital for their high level of compassion and care.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Irmy's name to Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10306, 718-987-1931 www.t2t.org
In accordance with Irmy's wishes, services will be private with a celebration of life to be planned at a later date.

I was so sorry to learn of Irmy's passing. My cousin Cheryl notified me recently. She was a good person, and so proud of her heritage. I know she will be missed by many. She is whole again and with Dick. May God Bless.
