Marilyn Murphy Obituary

Marilyn Ann Hutter Murphy
South Jacksonville - Marilyn Ann Hutter Murphy, 87, of South Jacksonville, died Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at Memorial Hospital in Springfield after a short bout with cancer. She was born July 23, 1937, in Springfield, the daughter of Frank and Mary Bresan Hutter of Springfield. Marilyn married George Murphy on August 25, 1956, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Springfield, in a ceremony performed by the late Father John S. Brockmeier.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, George, a son, Patrick (wife, Diane) Murphy of Mt. Vernon, and the late Kellie Murphy Wheatley. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Eric Neunaber of St. Charles, Missouri, Christopher (wife, Ann) Wheatley of Germantown Hills, Blaine Murphy of Mt. Vernon, Ansley (husband, Evan) Murphy Fraley of Arvada, Colorado, and Logan (wife, Morgan) Murphy of Collinsville; and seven great-grandchildren, Riley, Olivia, and Evelyn Neunaber, Emma Grace Wheatley, Townes Chamberlain Fraley, Ada Jude Fraley, and Lyla Ruth Murphy. In addition, Marilyn is survived by her son in law, Orville (wife, Marla) Wheatley of Jacksonville and adopted daughter Elisabeth (husband, Jan) van de Heuvel Noot of The Netherlands; her brother, Frank (wife, Barbara) Hutter of Springfield; her sister, Kathy (husband, Doug) Lawrence of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Marilyn graduated in 1955 from Ursuline Academy in Springfield. She worked for the Department of Public Welfare, Routt Catholic/Our Saviour School's lunch program, Barbara Langdon Interiors, and taught PSR for the 3rd grade at Our Saviour School for 30 years. Marilyn retired from The Wells Center in 2003.
Marilyn will be remembered for the delicious hamburgers she served every Thursday night for 25 years at the Jacksonville Sportsman Club. Her greatest joy was volunteering and assisting the needy every Tuesday (more often if needed) at the Jacksonville Food Center. Her membership in Beta Sigma Pi since the early 1960's was a highlight of her career, and she was very proud of the nearly seventy years involved.
Marilyn and her husband George were very active in Mothers Against Drunk Driving after the death of their 24-year-old daughter, Kellie, at the hands of a drunk driver. Their MADD Chapter, MADD Morgan County, was chartered in April of 1985 and both fought for stricter laws against impaired driving.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville, with interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. that day at Williamson Funeral Home. The service will be streamed online on the Church of Our Saviour Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Jacksonville Food Center (in care of Williamson Funeral Home, 1405 Lincoln Avenue, Jacksonville, Illinois 62650). A great lady and good friend. No words can tell you of the inspiration she gave me through knowing her and working with her at church functions and different activities.
