Abel Vargas Sr. was born on September 8, 1953, in New Braunfels, Texas to Juan Vargas and Rebecca (Aviles) Vargas.
In 1968 Abel Vargas Sr. moved to
Dimmitt, Texas from New Braunfels, Texas. In 1971 he was given an opportunity to change his life and enlisted in the U.S. Army with the infamous "Screaming Eagles" 101st Airborne Division A Company 1st Battalion 327th infantry. He served as a combat veteran and paratrooper in the jungles of A Shau Valley in Vietnam. He proudly served 2 tours in Vietnam, 1971 & 1972. In those 2 years he went from Private to Corporal for his valiant and heroic efforts. Because of his battle scars it took him over 40 years to talk about his experience there and never bragged about it, a testimony of his great humbleness.
After being discharged from Fort Campbell Kentucky he met his soul mate, Lydia (Gil) Vargas. They soon knew God had put them together and married January 22, 1973. Abel worked as a certified Gear Head Mechanic and Machinist for Big T Company for 14 years. In 1987 Abel started his own business, A & A Tree Trimming and Pruning. Later in 2007, he renamed it A & A Sprinkler Systems & Yard Service. After faithfully serving the community of Dimmitt and its surrounding towns, he retired in 2010. But he did what he could with the strength God had given him up until 2024 as an advisor.
In 1976, he was introduced to The Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. After meeting his Lord and the power he showed him of being forgiven and loved by God, he cried for 3 days straight with thankfulness and never once did he backslide to the world. In that year he formed a Christian group called Alumnos Del Maestro. He was an amazing and talented bass player. This same year he became an evangelist and with his beautiful and unmatched voice, he brought the gospel to many surrounding towns through his singing and preaching. Only God knows how many lives were saved and touched by his ministry. In the year 2002 he continued serving the ministry as Co-Pastor of Palabras de Vida Church. Being bedridden in 2024, he still continued to pray every night for all his family members and church members he could think of.
Abel loved to hear his favorite singers Tony Sauceda and Tom Jones. His favorite things to do were to watch America's Got Talent and the Voice on YouTube. The things he will most be remembered by his family is his love of the word and the truth. He taught his family to love the Lord. What really made an impact was his inspiration of faith to us all. Every moment with him was full of joy and laughter. He was always joking around even until his last goodbyes.
He would always say that he wanted to die with a Bible or M16 in his hands. Although, BSA did not allow him to have an M16, he held his Bible until his Last Breath.
He is survived by his wife, Lydia Vargas of Dimmitt, 2 sons, Abel Vargas Jr. and wife Roxanne of Dimmitt, and Xaden Vargas of Dimmitt, 5 daughters, Marisol Lopez and husband Robert of New Braunfels, Esmeralda Villareals and husband Louis Martinez of Amarillo, Adriana Cux and husband Antonio of Mississippi, Ivy Sanchez and husband Gabriel of Amarillo, and Ruby Sanchez of Amarillo, 3 sisters, Cruz Gonzales of Rome GA., Gloria Benavidez of New Braunfels, and Oralia Lugo and husband Juan of Dimmitt, 2 brothers, Juan Vargas and wife Christina of New Braunfels, and Mario Moreno and wife Sulema of Dimmitt, in-laws, Rene Gil and Mario Gil both of Dimmitt, and Clemencia Rendon of Amarillo along with seventeen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
He is reunited in heaven with his parents, Juan Vargas and Rebecca (Aviles) Vargas, children, Ruth and Jeremiah Vargas, brothers, Robert Gil and Ancesion (Chon) Vargas and sisters, Juana Gonzales and Gloria Gonzales.
