Al Don Campbell, 85, of Gordonsville, Virginia, formerly of Hot Springs, Virginia, went to join the heavenly angels on Thursday, June 5, 2025. He passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 7, 1939, in Alleghany County, Virginia, he was the son of the late Doctor Bee Campbell and Lucy Vance Campbell.
After a dedicated forty-three-year career with Applied Extrusion Technologies and Hercules Incorporated, Al celebrated his retirement with a month-long journey across the country, culminating in a trip to Alaska with his wife. A passionate outdoorsman, he found joy in hiking, hunting, and exploring the beauty of nature.
A man of faith, Al was deeply involved in his church and volunteered for numerous programs, services, and events over his life. He was a devoted member of the Falling Springs Rescue Squad for twenty-eight years, serving as an EMT and Treasurer. He was also a gifted woodworker, creating beautifully handcrafted furniture. In addition, Al was a talented musician, playing the violin, fiddle, banjo, and mandolin. He was a member of the Covington Orchestra and enjoyed playing weekly with a small group of friends in Gordonsville.
His adventurous spirit extended to traveling to all 50 states and many countries. He also enjoyed cruising, motorcycle riding, hiking, snorkeling, bicycling, and snow skiing.
Al is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Shirley Jackson Campbell, whom he married on October 28, 1967. He is also survived by three children, Tammy Avren and husband Maurice of Aldie, Virginia, Beverly Campbell of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Julie Beckwitt and husband Kenneth of Fairfax Station, Virginia. He leaves behind six grandchildren, Emma, Alexandra, Lillian, Olivia, Isabella, and Autumn. Al is also survived by his sister, Magdalene Marian and husband Paul, of Hot Springs, Virginia and a brother-in-law, Harle Jackson and wife Betty of Verona, Virginia. Al's love and devotion to his family were evident in everything he did, and he was deeply loved and a cherished role model to his daughters and granddaughters.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Hot Springs Presbyterian Church, with interment to follow at Warm Springs Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to a reception afterward at the Milk House Market at Old Dairy, in the Holstein Barn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Louisa County Rescue Squad at 83 Rescue Lane, Louisa, VA 22093.
