Allen Nelson Cunningham, 77, passed away suddenly on Monday, July 28, 2025, at UNC Health Wayne in Goldsboro.

Born in Greene County on November 26, 1947, Allen was the son of the late Bobby and Frances Cunningham. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Annette Cunningham; brother-in-law, Sammy P. Costner; and his beloved in-laws, Minnie Mae Anderson and Woodrow James Anderson.

A proud American and patriot, Allen honorably served his country in the First Cavalry Division of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His dedication and valor were recognized with numerous military honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Air Medal. He was a proud member of the Disabled American Veterans.

In 1982, Allen founded Cunningham Heating and Cooling in Goldsboro, where he dedicated over four decades to serving his community with integrity and hard work.

Allen was a member of The First Church in Goldsboro, where he found great joy and fellowship worshipping with the congregation since 2009. His faith was a guiding light in his life, and he cherished the friendships and spiritual growth he experienced within the church community.

Allen loved sports, especially cheering on his Atlanta Braves. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing whenever time allowed. However, nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his family. He often said that marrying Joyce was the best decision he ever made. His children were his pride, and his grandchildren were the apple of his eye. Whether it was watching them play ball or simply being near them, Allen's love for his family was constant and deeply felt.

He shared a close bond with his sister, Charlotte, and the two kept in frequent contact throughout each day. He also held a special place in his heart for his sister-in-law, Gloria Jane Anderson.

Allen is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Joyce Anderson Cunningham; his children, Allen Nelson Cunningham, Jr. and wife Meghan, Philip Anderson Cunningham, and Jessica Jayne Cunningham and her special friend, James Gorman; and his cherished grandchildren, Nelleigh Cunningham, Allen Nelson "Tripp" Cunningham, III, and Collins Cunningham. He is also survived by his loving sister, Charlotte C. Costner, and special sister-in-law, Gloria Jane Anderson.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 31, 2025, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at The First Church, 1100 The First Church Road, Goldsboro. A service to celebrate Allen's life will follow at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Pastor Bill Rose officiating. Interment with military honors will be held on Friday, August 1, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.

Flowers are welcome, or memorial contributions may be made to The First Church, 1100 The First Church Road, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
