The Funeral Service for Mr. Alphonso Gay will be held on Friday, July 25, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at Union Tabernacle Baptist Church, Americus, Georgia. Burial will follow at New Hope A.M.E Cemetery, Smithville, Georgia.
Alphonso Gay was born December 24, 1938, to Evelyn and Lawrence Bruce Gay Sr. in Florida. As a child, he moved to the small town of Smithville, GA. Heavily involved in the churches in Smithville and nearby Americus, Alphonso joined the gospel group The Harmony Stars. The group released a few singles and eventually a professionally produced album entitled. During this time, he retired from his job of thirty-three years as a machine operator at Stone Containers.
In 1995, after fifteen years of dating, Alphonso married Mamie, growing his family to include Mamie, her sons, and her relatives. He eventually moved to Americus, Georgia with her and later to Austell, Georgia. His connection to God remained steadfast throughout his life, ultimately becoming a deacon at his local church. In his later years, he was known to host church for himself in his own living room when he couldn't make it to service. He would consult five Bibles at a time while praying, singing, and praising the Lord. Alphonso became a beacon of advice, wisdom, and support for his family in his sunset years. When he passed on July 15, 2025, he was surrounded by those he loved and those who also loved him.
Alphonso leaves behind the following beloved family members: his wife of thirty years, Mamie Gay; his children: Tracey L. Gay-Pugh and Terrance A. Gay Sr.; two stepchildren: Fred Huff and Franklin Huff Jr.; grandchildren: Terrance A. Gay Jr. and Toshonna Towler; siblings: Joyce McGriff and Lawrence Gay Jr.; godchildren: Betty Cutz and Gary Mitchell; and his lifelong friend, Wiley Kendrick.
He joins these other members of his family in the arms of the Lord: grandmother, Alice Brown; mother, Evelyn Dismuke; father, Lawrence Bruce Gay Sr.; stepfather, Griffin Dismuke; brothers: Ronald Dismuke and Curtis Dismuke; and spouse, Bernice Grimes-Gay.
