Angela "Angie" Moncrief Elkins, 91, a seventy-year active member of the
Durham, North Carolina community, passed away on March 7, 2025 following a brief illness. Born on August 3, 1933 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Angie dedicated her life as an advocate for fairness and equality. She was the only child of the late Noel Jackson Moncrief and the late Geneva Sibley Moncrief, spending her teenage years with her parents in her mother's hometown of Albemarle, North Carolina. In 1954 she and her husband, the late Fredrick K. Elkins moved to his hometown Durham where she remained until her death.
As a young mother, she was a stay-at-home mom who was active in her children's activities. Starting in her early thirties, Angie became involved in the political arena not only with the Democratic party but with Democratic women organizations. With her heart always anchored in Durham, she rose in the ranks and in 1980 became the President of the National Federation of Democratic Women, the first North Carolinian to hold that position. In a 2023 publication, "Celebrating over 50 years of Democratic Women of the Year," which included many notable women including North Carolina Justices and elected officials, Angie was the seventh recipient of the Democratic Women of North Carolina Woman of the Year. As stated in the publication, these women who have been recognized serve as role models, champions of women and women's rights and an inspiration for all of us.
Angie is survived by her three children, Butch Elkins (Mary), Candy Clark (Don), and Debbie Rozier (Eli), her seven grandchildren, Chad Clark (Danielle), Angie Clark Colclough (Wes), Olivia Elkins, Liz Dryden (Ben), Paige Aiken (Sam), Hope Rozier (fiancé, Corey Levine) and Eve Rozier; and six great grandchildren, Noah O'Briant, Blake Colclough, Leah Colclough, Christian Clark, Connor Clark, and Charlotte Clark; and numerous nieces, nephews and cherished friends.
