Annie Loraine Small was born on January 10, 1942 in Collins, Georgia to the late Juttie Jackson and Mary Luvenia (Collins) Jackson. She departed this life on July 20, 2025.
A woman of deep faith, Annie was a long-standing member of New Bethaven Primitive Baptist Church in Collins, Georgia, where she faithfully served in many capacities for many decades; Annie was also an active member of the New Mount Pleasant Primitive Baptist Association and a member of Sweet Evening Breeze #269 Order of Eastern Star.
From childhood and into adulthood, Annie was dedicated to serving the very community she gained her education. After studying childhood education at Savannah State College, she devoted over 30 years of her life to shaping young minds as an educator in the Tattnall County School System. Her impact in the classroom extended far beyond academics-she was a nurturer, a mentor, and a pillar in her community. You would often find Annie talking to former students when she was out and about.
Annie had a lifelong passion for history-particularly the history of her family and her community; she took great pride in preserving stories, documents, and memories that otherwise might have been forgotten.
Annie enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom she helped raise with boundless love, patience, and wisdom. Annie’s life was a testament to faith, service, and community.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph Lamar Small; her cherished daughter, Karey Small; and brother, George D. Jackson. She leaves to cherish her memory four devoted sons: Jarvis Small, Sr. (Dian) of Reidsville, Georgia; Fredrick Small (Delores) of Reidsville, Georgia; Casey Small (Cheree) of Claxton, Georgia; and Burke Brown of Jacksonville, Florida; two beloved goddaughters, Tina McCrary of Newport News, Virginia and Willie Mae Young of Reidsville, Georgia; her brothers, Muriel Jackson (Yvonne) of Vidalia, Georgia, and Roger Jackson (Gladys) of Collins, Georgia; and her sister, Mae Irish Small (and her late husband, Willie “Bill” Small) of Collins, Georgia. Annie's legacy continues through a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved her dearly.
