Arthur Matthew Covington was born on June 13, 1949, in Cheraw, SC, to Addie Mae Covington. He completed his schooling in the Chesterfield County Public School System, graduating from Long High School in Cheraw. Arthur served in the Vietnam War from October 24, 1967, until his honorable discharge on January 15, 1971, where he achieved the rank of Private First Class (E3). During his time in service, he received multiple accolades, including the National Service Medal, National Defense Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
On February 14, 1987, Arthur married the former Doris Clark Preston, and they were blessed with six children together.
A committed life member of the Pee Dee Union Baptist Church in Cheraw, SC, Arthur Matthew Covington was actively involved in the Men's Choir and showed unwavering dedication to his church. He used his gifts to glorify God and share His love with those in his vicinity. His altruistic service included various responsibilities within the church, reflecting his commitment to Christ, the church's objectives, and the local community. Additionally, he was a participant in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Male Choir in Ansonville, NC.
Following his military career, Arthur had a long tenure with Wiscassett Mills Company in Albemarle, NC, and later retired from Premier Fibers in Ansonville, NC.
Arthur Matthew Covington departed this life on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. He was preceded in death by his mother, Addie Mae Covington; two brothers, James and Joe Covington; one child, Fernando Covington; and one stepdaughter, Elder Celia Parsons.
Arthur is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Doris Covington, who remains in their home. He leaves behind two step-daughters, Michelle Diggs (Jose) of Charlotte, NC, and Sirlonia Stevens (Tyrone) of Kernersville, NC, as well as two step-sons, Walter Preston of Ansonville, NC and Adrian Preston of the home.
His legacy is carried on by 13 grandchildren: J. Emmanuel Diggs, Joshua Diggs, Matthew Diggs, Elijah Diggs, Ebone Stevens, Tyrone Stevens Jr., Deon Chapman, Paris Chapman, Shannon Katelynn Wilson, Sierra Preston, Adrian Preston Jr., Jordan Summers, and Lyric Evans. He is also remembered by his two brothers-in-law, MacArthur Clark and Jimmy Clark, both from Ansonville, NC, and three sisters-in-law: Laura Smith, Minnie Tyson, and Mary Cox, who also hail from Ansonville, NC. In addition, he leaves behind two special nieces, Katrina Covington of Buena Park, CA and Myeshia Covington of Cheraw, SC; two special cousins, Thomasina Wilson and Helen Wilson, loyal friends Jessie and Valencia Howard, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and cherished friends.
