November 22, 1955 – June 30, 2025
Bernie Hines, age 69, passed away on June 30, 2025. A devoted father, proud veteran, and beloved friend to many, Bernie lived a life marked by service, strength, and love.
Born in Youngstown, Ohio, on November 22, 1955, he was the cherished son of William Hines and Bernice Womack. He was one of eight siblings: Tyrone Hines, Yvonne Hines, William Hines, Maurice Hines, Franklin Joseph Colpetro, Tina Marie Colpetro, and Cathy Ann Colpetro.
Bernie proudly served his country as a U.S. Army Ranger before retiring and beginning a second successful career as a long-haul truck driver. His trucking record was impeccable-every load delivered on time, every route completed safely. His work ethic was unmatched, and his commitment to excellence shown through in everything he did.
Bernie was a loving father to Tamara Riley, Sonya "Niki" Jackson, Tenasha Jackson, Tequilla Huff, and Najah Herbert. He is also survived by his grandchildren DeAndre Black, Tennia Riggs, Kadeejah Jackson, Tenasha Hines, Keeson Hines-Wheeler, Calessa Huff, Blake Herbert, along with a growing legacy of great-grandchildren.
Bernie was known not only for his dedication and discipline but also for his warmth and charisma. He was a master on the grill, an avid fisherman, and took great pride in keeping his home spotless. Whether swapping stories, offering a helping hand, or firing up the grill for a backyard cookout, Bernie had a gift for bringing people together. He never met a stranger-only friends he hadn't gotten to know yet.
Bernie's presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit lives on in the stories he told, the meals he shared, and the love he gave so freely.

I want to wish Bernie's families and friends the absolute best even though I know your heart breaks, you should know he was an outstanding man who was a huge influence in so many other young soldiers in the military as myself. As with the others who have posted I knew him an Echo company 51st Infantry Wiesbaden West Germany . His thumbprint (influence) is on hundreds if not thousands now of young men & women, all because he came in contact with a few. He was a good NCO a good man and a good leader. You are missed Bernie.

It was a pleasure to serve with Bernie Hines at E-51st in Germany in the 80's. I remember when I received a Red cross telegram telling me my mother was in the hospital and may not make it, Bernie seen me all upset and going crazy. He took me aside and comfort me by talking to me and calming me down for the moment, he told me to make sure if I had any issues to let him know. I was not even in his platoon but he took time out to show his compassion, he was a true leader among men, cared about his Soldiers and loved being a Warrior. You will be missed by so many. R.I.P Warrior. RTLW/EBTL

I first met ssg. Bernie Hines when I was in basic training 1985 he was in the admin offices of my basic training company Echo company sixth battalion first training brigade E-6-1 at sand hill fort benning.
I had battalion CQ he was the NCO on duty he told me I had to lower the flag and fold it and put it away.
I looked at him like a deer in the headlights. He just started laughing and said you never done this before have you.
No sgt I have no idea what I´m doing.
So time came he lowered it with me and very patiently showed me how to fold my very first flag. Showed me where it goes for the night and I went to walk out of the room when he grabbed me by my shoulder and said you´re not done and proceeded to tell me when you put the flag away for the night you show it respect, salute it do an about face and leave the room.
Six months later I was sent to Echo company in Germany and there was ssg Hines. I reminded him who I was and we had a good laugh about it. Spent the next 3 years with him there.
He was a good man and I don´t think I ever saw him in a bad mood and he was always smiling and making the best of situations.
He will be sorely missed. May the Ranger gods be with you Bernie. Rest in peace
