Bertha Marie Heiny, 95, Martinsville, passed away at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2025 at her daughter's home. She was surrounded by her loving family and drew her last breath as her Pastor John Maples had just finished a prayer.
She was born on Sunday, June 1, 1930 in Martinsville, Indiana, to the late Hubert and Dorothy M. (Baldwin) Ferguson.
Bertha Marie was a 1948 graduate of Center Grove High school where she was Senior Vice-President. She was a stay-at-home mom until 1967. She first worked at Stagg's Drug Store and later went to work at South Central Indiana REMC. She was the head accountant there until her retirement in 1990.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Martinsville since 1949. She was a very strong and devout Christian. She was active with the church choir, was the church financial secretary for many years, on the church board and served with many missionary groups. Bertha Marie was a long time Sunday School Teacher; the last class she taught was the Senior Adult Class. For 20 years she wintered in Bradenton, Florida, and attended the Elwood Baptist Church in Bradenton.
Bertha Marie enjoyed traveling, jigsaw puzzles and walking. She especially liked walking to the library because she had a passion for reading.
Survivors are her daughter, Pamela "Pam" Russell of Martinsville; son, Stephen Heiny (Rosa) of Franklin; sister, Sue Gomes of Bradenton, Florida; grandchildren, Jozie Lee, Betsey James, Brittney Esguerra, Jeremiah Heiny, Santos Heiny, Carlos Heiny and Michael Heiny; 16 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild.
Bertha Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Heiny, whom she married on February 20, 1949 and he passed away on May 8, 1994; son, Joe Heiny; a great grandchild; parents, Hubert and Dorothy; brother, Donald Ferguson; son-in-law, Raymond "Bud" Russell; brother-in-law, Chuck Gomes.
Funeral services will be 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 2025 at the First Baptist Church, 1109 East Columbus Street, Martinsville, Indiana, with Pastor John Maples officiating. Visitation will be at the church prior to the funeral service starting at 3:00 p.m.
Burial will be at New South Park Cemetery in Martinsville.
