Bertha Ruth Matthews, age 87, passed away peacefully on the 20th of July, 2025. Born on October 1, 1937, in Tazewell, Tennessee, to the late Tilmon and Susie Coffey,
Bertha's life was one of unwavering devotion to her family, her faith, and her community. She was a treasured wife to her late husband, Jim Matthews, and together they built a legacy of love and resilience. Her spirit is carried on by her loving children Sharon Collins and husband Larry, Debbie Bishop and husband Chris and Gary Johnson and his wife Shannon. Bertha's role as a grandmother was one, she held with great pride and joy. Her grandchildren, Sophie Johnson, Daniel Runions and his wife Bethany, Kim Davis and Bopper, Chad Collins and his wife Iris, and Devin Collins and his wife Meredith, all benefited from her endless love, wisdom, and homemade fudge. The light of her life shone brightly upon her great-grandchildren, Carter Runions, Riley, Clint, Perry, Owen, Ruby, and Kelsey Collins, who will continue to feel her love through the stories and memories shared.
Bertha was a member of The Upper Room Ministries.
Those who knew Bertha will recall her loving nature, which was the cornerstone of her existence. She was a woman who found joy in the simple pleasures of life-be it a sunny day, a blooming garden, or the laughter of her grandchildren. Her kind spirit was infectious, and her gentle guidance was a comfort to all who were fortunate enough to cross her path.
Bertha leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched. Her life was a testament to the power of kindness, the strength of family, and the enduring warmth of community. As we say farewell to this remarkable woman, we take solace in knowing that her spirit will forever be woven into the fabric of Tazewell, and her memory will be cherished for generations to come.
The family will receive friends Wednesday July 23, 2025, from 5:00 pm till 7:00 pm at The Upper Room Ministries Church funeral services to follow at 7:00 pm with Bro. Ual Russell officiating music will be provided by Upper Room Ministries and Michael and Clarissa Coffey. Burial Thursday July 24, 2025, at 10:00 am in the Margraves Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Chad Collins, Devin Collins, Mike Miller, Michael Coffey, David Coffey, and Owen Collins.
