Mrs. Bessie Deberry Carter passed away on Sunday morning, October 19, 2025, at the Genesis Meridian Nursing Facility. She was born on December 26, 1932, to William Perry Deberry and Daisy Chisem Deberry.
She attended school in Wadesboro, NC. She later moved to High Point to find employment and to reunite with her cousins, who were like sisters and brothers to her: Mary Janes, Martha, James, and Ann. She worked as a domestic caregiver, providing support and companionship to those in need until her declining health in 2021. In her leisure time, she enjoyed reading and cooking delicious meals for family and friends.
Bessie was a dedicated member of Mt. Olivet AME Zion Church for 30-plus years, where she served as an usher and missionary. She actively supported the church until her health declined.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Carter; three children: Brenda Jean Wright, Vedamerl Wright, and Phillip Wm Deberry, and three great-grandchildren, Harrier, Brianna, and Camden.
Bessie leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter Bernadette Smith (Leon) of High Point, NC; grandchildren, Michelle Wright of High Point, NC; Kennon Wright of Reidsville, NC; Aleshia Harris of Winston Salem, NC; Kennedi Harris of High Point, NC; Simone Wright of Winston-Salem, NC; Trekelia (Chris) Chavis of Fuquay, NC; and Dion Deberry of Durham, NC; great grandchildren, Chance Wright of Richmond, VA; Sydney Board (Sean) of Charlotte, NC; Myah Craig (Brod) of Raleigh, NC; Kennedi Harris of High Point, NC and Noah Smith (Brianna) of Thomasville, NC; great-great grandchildren, Braylin, Darius "DJ", Bryson, Bayliegh, Mayson and Noah Jr., and a host of other family members and friends.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Olivet AME Zion Church, 2123 McConnell Rd., Greensboro, NC. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park.
Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.
