Bessie Laverne Ragsdale Hicks, lovingly known as Laverne, 72, of Atlanta, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025. Born on February 26, 1953, in Atlanta, she lived a life full of grit, laughter, and heart-the kind of woman whose spirit filled every room and left a lasting mark on everyone she met.

Laverne was a firecracker – strong-willed, wildly talented, and endlessly curious. She was a truck driver for part of her life, traveling across the country and seeing all but four of the fifty states. She was a collector of many things and a master of many more: cooking, baking, crafting, fixing, and creating. If it could be done with her hands, she figured out how to do it – and did it well.

There was never a moment of silence around her – a cooking show, game show, or Discovery Channel was always playing in the background, reflecting her vibrant and curious spirit. She was a safe space to talk about anything, a warm and comforting presence who made you feel at home no matter where you were.

Laverne is survived by her devoted life partner, James; her children, Sylvia, Christina, and James "Bubba"; eight grandchildren, Misty, Ashley, Jamie, Bonnie, Cody, Jordan, Lucas, and Anthony; thirteen great-grandchildren, Kaiden, Adalynn, Kolby, Carter, Jaycee, Olivia, Emma, Sofia, Leeah, Charlee, DeMarkus and Jett. She is also lovingly remembered by her uncle Eugene and Aunt Mary. Each one carries a piece of her strength, creativity, and unconditional love.

The family will celebrate Laverne's life in a private gathering. In her memory, we encourage others to live boldly, love deeply, and never stop learning, just like she did.

"She knew a little about a lot, could do just about anything, and loved with her whole heart. We'll carry her legacy in our hands, our kitchens, and our laughter and our love".
