Betty Cole Dorris, 69, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with kidney cancer.
She was born on October 12, 1955, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Ella and Earl Cole. Betty was baptized on January 23, 1966, by Brother Ford at Eastland Baptist Church, where she attended for many years. She graduated from Hume-Fogg Technical High School in Nashville in July 1973 with a degree in Data Processing.
While working for the Tennessee Bureau of Medicaid, Betty met the love of her life, Michael Dorris. They were married on April 23, 1988, in Portland, Tennessee, and built a life together in Indianapolis.
Betty spent over 40 years in the computer and document management field, performing data entry, scanning, coding, and document preparation. She worked for several companies in Indianapolis including Cromer, Eaglesfield & Maher; CompuLitS Inc.; IIS; Imagemax; ITC; Imaging Office Systems; Preferred Imaging Inc.; and Q Discovery LLC. She was deeply passionate about her work, and the quality she delivered spoke for itself.
Throughout her life, Betty faced cancer four times with remarkable strength and unwavering faith. Steroid treatments led to steroid dependency and diabetes, but she remained resilient. On sleepless nights, she found comfort in playing Solitaire and Spider Solitaire, both with cards and on the computer.
Through every challenge, she was never alone-her devoted husband Mike stood by her side, offering constant love and support.
Betty had a joyful spirit and a love for laughter. Halloween was one of her favorite times of year, and she delighted in dressing up and handing out candy and small gifts to friends, coworkers, store clerks, bank tellers, and even strangers on the street. Her kindness and cheer were infectious.
Her pets were her beloved companions-Lady Bug, Shotshe, Mama Cat, Tom Cat, Lilly, and Calico-each holding a special place in her heart.
Betty had many passions. She loved tending to her irises, making large photo collages for special occasions, watching court shows, and completing word search puzzles. She also enjoyed quilting-an art lovingly passed down to her by her grandmother, Lillian, and Mike's grandmother, Ruth. She had a deep appreciation for family heritage and took pride in maintaining the family tree.
Betty is preceded in death by her father, Earl Cole; her grandmother, Lillian Honeycutt-McKee; and her brother, Kinnie Earl Cole.
She is survived by her loving husband, Michael D. Dorris of Indianapolis; her mother, Ella Harding, and stepfather, Richard Harding, of Smyrna, Tennessee; her sisters, Virginia (James) Spaunhorst of Greenbrier, TN, and Judy (Rick) Deno of Ashland City, TN; her brother, James Dudley of Goodlettsville, TN; and numerous nieces and nephews in Tennessee.
Betty's final prayer to those she leaves behind was this:
"I pray that Jesus will guide our politicians and world leaders so that they will make the right decisions to protect our Earth, Home, Planet, and World for all of God's creation."
