William (Bill) Walter Windsor Sr., age 89, formerly of Knightstown, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his home in Rome, Georgia, on July 9, 2025. A true friend to many, Bill's life was marked by faithful service to God, country, and family. He will never be forgotten.
Born on September 24, 1935, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Bill was the son of the late Edna Lorraine (Powell) and Howard Eldon Windsor. On August 5, 1956, he married the love of his life, Sally Ann (Carter) Windsor. This August would have marked their 69th wedding anniversary.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife Sally; three children: Bill Windsor Jr., David (Cindy) Windsor, and Cathy (Scott) Jones; a sister, Dawn (Rob) Moore. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Megan Windsor, Wil Windsor, Jessica (Ken) McCurdy, Jacob (Alyson) Windsor, Macey (Garyson) Lanham, Grahm Jones, and Bridgette Jones; five great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by Jeanne Windsor, Kellis Veach, and Mathew Cooper.
A graduate of Carthage High School, Class of 1953, Bill lived a life devoted to service. He served in the Army Reserve for eight years and was an active member of both the Carthage and Knightstown Christian Churches. Bill retired from Chrysler Corporation in 1991 at the age of 56.
His commitment to his community was evident throughout his life. Bill served over 60 years as a volunteer firefighter with both the Carthage and Knightstown departments, holding every position in the ranks, including chief. In addition to his fire service, Bill became a certified EMT and was instrumental in establishing the Southwest District Ambulance Service in Knightstown.
Beyond his emergency service, Bill was deeply involved in civic life. He served at the Hoosier Gym and was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion. In recognition of his exceptional volunteerism and commitment to public service, Bill was honored with the prestigious Jefferson Award in 1999, a national recognition celebrating individuals who make a difference in their communities. Bill was an avid fisherman and spent many vacations fishing with family and friends in Ludington Michigan and Canada. He also enjoyed hunting, and rooting on the Colts and the Indiana Hoosiers. Bill Windsor lived a full and generous life, dedicated to helping others. His legacy of love, faith, and service will live on in his family and the many lives he touched.
