Bob Starck Obituary

Bob Starck

March 20, 1945 - June 25, 2025

Robert Dean Starck spent nearly his entire life in Nebraska, a place he loved deeply and documented with quiet devotion. He was born in Lincoln to Alvin and Viola (née Herman) Starck, the third of their children, after Gary Starck and Sheral Riffer.

Bob grew up with a boundless curiosity and a deep love of the outdoors, hunting, sports, and art. He graduated from Lincoln High School and went on to earn his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany, where he explored much of Europe and refined his gift for photography. It was there that his lifelong passion to document the world around him truly began.

Bob's photographs captured everyday people and places, revealing the extraordinary within the ordinary. His most notable work was featured in The Nebraska Photographic Documentary Project 1975-1977, published with Lynn Dance with a preface by Arthur Rothstein. Their photographs followed in the footsteps of the WPA documentarians-simple, straightforward, and honest.

Bob is survived by his son, Colby Starck; daughter-in-law Aimée Starck; and granddaughter Lorelei Starck, all of Chicago. For the past 31 years, he lived on the Winnebago Reservation with his chosen family, who embraced and cared for him as one of their own.

I only met Bob a short time before he passed, we spoke for several hours and his stories were amazing. The naughty twinkle in his eye when being ornery about his surroundings was unmistakable as was his great sense of humor even in the most dismal of times for him. The self reflection that he had was humbling and made me care very deeply for him even though we had only just met. You could tell immediately that he was a very "in tune" person and his empathy was immense. I'm sorry we didn't have time to go and find his Winnebago family as we had wanted. I went with someone with whom had spent years of his life with Bob and had known Bob for decades- he was a vital source of support for him and they spoke of the many times Bob helped him out of trouble and helped him on a good path. The laughter they shared ebbed through any sadness of the day. He will be remembered fondly even though I only knew him a few hours, his impact will last for many many years to come, as will his stories of the friends he loved.

I met Bob in the 1970´s in Lincoln ... we had many great times together ... best way to say it, "a really good and fun guy".

Colby - We only met your dad a few times when we visited Winnebago, but he was a constantly good influence on all those around him, always wanting to help folks in need, and guide those who needed guidance. Bob only wanted to help preserve the environment around him and improve the lives of those he met. Bob will always be well remembered in our family. With our sincere condolences, and wishing you every strength at this time.
