Bonnie Ilene Cargile passed away peacefully at Westward Heights Care Center on August 14th, 2025. She was born in North Loup, Nebraska, on Dec. 16, 1934. Bonnie was the middle of three girls Donnal, Kalivas, and Paula Carter. Her family moved to Green River when she was 9, and she has always called Green River her home. As a child, she loved to go ice skating, read Nancy Drew books, play with paper dolls, and her close friends. The Great Depression had an impact on her, and she was frugal her whole life. She often told stories of putting cardboard in her shoes to get a few more months out of her holey shoes and being so excited about having a fresh orange in her stocking at Christmas. She married Charles Cargile after she graduated from Green River High School. Bonnie and Chuck were very active in all community events involving the fire department, Elks, and other community organizations. There are many fun photos of them dressed "to the nines"!. In 1960, Charles Dea was born. Bonnie threw herself into motherhood and loved being a stay-at-home mom. She also cared for other children during this time. Four years later, Shawna Lynne was born. Bonnie loved being a mother, sewing clothes for her kids in addition to the church choir, Easter Star, and other community groups. The Cargiles spent time every summer in the Wind River Mountains at their family cabin up at Big Sady Openings. They loved picnics, fishing, hiking, and playing board games. Many memories were built at "the cabin," and the kids always looked forward to buying a nickel bag of candy on the way up and a big ice cream cone in Farson on their return home.
Bonnie was an amazing cook, and Sunday fried chicken was a staple. She was very good at preparing wild game, pies, pineapple upside-down cake, and of course, big holiday dinners. Bonnie started work when the kids were in upper elementary school and worked for 20 years at the Clerk of the District Court. She developed some lifelong friendships while working at the courthouse. Bonnie and Chuck loved to travel and had many memorable vacations together.
Bonnie had a flair for style, loved shopping, and always looked her best. Even in her later years, she had her hair fixed, lipstick on, matching purse, and shoes! Bonnie's greatest gift was compassion for others. She always wanted to make a wrong right, help people in need, include others, and take a meal to someone. As time went by and she was less able to do this, so many of her friends repaid the love by taking her to doctor appointments, shopping, or just dropping a dinner by.
Bonnie had a great sense of humor, and at times her unexpected sense of humor was shocking but very funny. Many would describe her as tenacious and the strongest person they knew. She suffered her whole life with health issues and arthritis. She never stopped moving, kept up her house, and no matter how much pain she was in, she always did what needed to be done. In her last weeks, she exhibited amazing grit and endured more than anyone can imagine with strength and dignity. She inspired others, and her grandson describes her as the toughest old gal on the block.
Charles W. Cargile preceded her in death in 1990, and her immediate survivors are Charles Dea Cargile, his wife Willy, Shawna Pickinpaugh, and her husband Richard. Bonnie has 5 grandchildren: Kristin, Kaylee, Kallie, Matthew, and Mary. 3 great grandchildren, Austin, Kyle Hayden, and one great-great grandchild, Paisley.
Her Celebration of Life will be at the Union Congregational Church, 350 Mansface St., Green River, WY. At 10:30 am, August 30, 2025.
