Brenda Ankers Schroff passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025, in her residence in Vienna, VA at age 73. Born on August 10, 1951, in Washington, DC, she was proud to be a rare native of the DMV.
Brenda was a cherished daughter to the late G. Robert (Bob) and June Ankers. She was a beloved wife of 52 years to her husband Dennis (Denny) and devoted mother to Laura and Roger Scaletti. She was a friend who left a legacy of love and caring that will continue to resonate with all who knew her.
When she was in elementary school, Brenda, Bob and June moved from DC all the way out to the country, according to her grandparents. The "country" at that time was all the way in McLean, VA. It was there that she would cross paths with Denny when they met during a ski trip when they were both in high school. Captivated by Brenda, Denny ended up following her to Lynchburg College, where they would marry the day prior to her graduating from college in 1973. From that day forward you would rarely see one without the other.
Brenda went to Lynchburg to become a teacher. How she loved working with her little people. For 28 years, she shaped the minds of the future and was such a steady presence in the classroom her students would often accidentally call her "Mom" instead of Mrs. Schroff. She had a rule where she only taught those who were shorter than her. Over the years, she taught Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade – with her favorite grade being Second Grade. She never forgot a student and loved to regale stories of "her kids" whenever she could.
While she loved her "kids" in the classroom, the biggest joy in her life was her daughter Laura. She could not spend enough time with Laura. Each day consisted of many phone calls, texts and most likely a trip out to the barn to watch Laura ride one of Brenda's "grand horses." She was always up for an adventure with Laura. She lived for the annual family trip to Myrtle Beach, as so many happy memories had been made there with her parents, Denny, Laura and eventually Roger. She was so much fun.
Brenda always wanted a son and was thrilled when Laura brought Roger home. She absolutely adored Roger from the minute she met him nearly 20 years ago and was so happy when he officially joined the family in 2007. She would equally brag about Laura and Roger to all those who would listen.
She was so proud of her family. She loved that the four of them were so close, that they truly cared about each other, and loved to spend time together.
Brenda was the Ultimate Horse Show Mom. She loved spending the weekends at horse shows. She might not get there at the crack of dawn, but she'd be the last one to leave at night as she went from ring to ring cheering folks on. She truly was a fixture on the horse show circuit. She had her lucky spots she would stand at each venue and would happily chat your ear off and tell one story after another. If she took you under her wing as your honorary "horse show mom" she made you feel cherished, capable of anything and unconditionally loved. She made so many friends cruising around the horse shows on the golf cart with Denny.
As we celebrate her life, let's remember that every chuckle, every conversation had with her, every act of kindness, and every moment spent with her was a gift. Brenda, you will be greatly missed. You always made everyone feel special, especially Denny, Laura and Roger. We will always remember your laugh and picture you with a smile on your face.
